That is a lot of valuable information. Your birds are beauties, Liz. I, too, have Fires, but mine are Senegals (I think.. I'm not sure now..

). Whatever they are, they are wonderful little birds and great parents... right now they are nesting and sitting tight. I never peek on these little jewels, because they will toss at the drop of a hat.

Here is a list of all the lagonosticta subspecies and the links to them. I love the world wide web because it makes researching and learning about the finch species by the click of the mouse

You can also type the different latin names in and gain a wealth of information on each subspecies. Have fun

Thanks for the link Candace. I just wish they had more pic and more pictures to compare them all on one page would be real nice! I'm a picture kind of person.

The Fires in Donna's picture 6384 are Senegals - it is her other pair that is in question. Which makes me wonder if that is why they haven't bred yet for you Donna.

I also did not know there were so many types. I am just glad my limited choices have left me to true type pairs (or so I think! LOL)

I remembered this site, I cannot remember who on this forum linked to there first, I think RAY RAY. They show nice pics, although after looking I am seeing too many look-a-likes that are subspecies. I wonder if I truely do have a solid pair of Senegals. My hen looks suspiciously like the subsp.

Thanks Monique for posting that link again - it's PERFECT for comparing pics!! I can really see the difference between the Black-bellied hen I have and the Black-faced hen that I need! Thanks again.

Yes, thanks, Monique... those pics are great. I know my male is a Senegal, but still not sure about the female. Since they are nesting at present, I'll have to wait a few weeks to get a 'close up.

BTW, Liz, your 'looky, looky' made me smile. I havent heard that in years.

She is very pretty, very red compared to mine.
I think mine is a Senegal... soft olive brown with spotted chest. A bit of red on the eyes, tail and beak.

So... if I have two males, that willl explain why they haven't bred.

Well I suppose I will have to search for some "girls" for them.

Good excuse to buy more firefinches. I am not gonna trade them because they are too pretty AND I would feel terrible to take them from my free aviary to a cage.
