Re: Do you have an aviary?
Thanks, all!
I ordered the fountain online but I actually don't remember which site it was. The birds don't use it though, they still prefer the water dishes for bathing. But they seem to like the splashing noise. I have it on a timer and as soon as it comes on in the morning their singing gets louder.

Ursula, how do you keep the finches and budgies out of the chick starter that you feed your quail? I'm a little concerned about that once I introduce my buttons to the aviary.

Re: Do you have an aviary?
Domenic, I have their crumbles in a shallow dish on the ground and I have never (in over 3 years) seen a finch or budgie eating from that dish or even just sitting on it. (They eat from the button's veggie tray that's also on the floor but never from the crumbles...) Maybe the crumbles don't look like food to the finches and budgies? In fact, the problem in the aviary is that the buttons themselvesrather eat anything but the crumbles and they are not supposed to only eat seed. However, they are crazy about anything insect tasting, so as a treat I sprinkle freeze dried mealworms or insect treat mix on the crumbles, then they eat more of them...
So don't worry about the food mix.
Just an afterthought: If your birds are on pellets instead of seed mix then I wouldn't be so sure that they would ignore it...

Re: Do you have an aviary?
Well, we changed the netting in front of the windows with bars. We had an "almost freak" accident with a budgie who got caught in the netting with one foot. Luckily it happened on a saturday and I saw him in time to rescue him. After that we decided that the netting has to go and we need something else to alert the birds to the big windows. We thought about window grids but didn't want to just glue something on, an it's expensive too. So we came up with the "bars" idea. We created them out of "dowel" sticks and L and T shaped pipe pieces. Hard to explain, see for yourself:

The birds seem to love it, they hang out on the bars in groups and look out the windows. It's almost as if they are saying "why didn't you think of this earlier?"

Re: Do you have an aviary?
Thanks, Cindy! Yes, it was pretty scary. Silly thing was lucky too that her foot didn't break. It must have been sore, she favored it for a few days but was obviously fine.cindy wrote:Very nice Ursula...love all the the birds getting along. Love your parrotlets! Your window idea looks good. My parrotlets are fun birds, I love them to pieces. Not that I don't love all my birds, but they are so much more interactive. How's your Louey doing ?

VERY, VERY nice, Ursula. Very innovative and bird friendly. Good job!Gaviota wrote:We do not have an aviary but we love to. We are moving soon and then we are going to have more space. If you have a sketch, photos or links that have ideas of aviaries and you would like to share we will appreciate it. Thanks.
This is the one I'm attempting, check out the site, click on the 'construction' link for a detailed 'how to'.

Re: Do you have an aviary?
Hey everyone, im still new to this forum and very late on the coconut part but I've given my Zebra finches the hairs on the coconuts and my male (WhiteOut) has just started using them to weave thru the wicker nest and finally starting today weave some inside the nest where I padded it down with 1in nesting strings so they don't get cought ... I've seen my birds from childhood get stuck in it when I was 9 and my grandma took the nest out and gently cut two parts and pulled the wicker section she cut off and released the birdies leg... the birdy didn't get injured I remember it was a Zebra finch but I can't remember if it was the male or female... but anyway, my male is weaving the hairs from the coconuts into the top of the nest (outside) and inside of the nest, its quite interesting because before he would never go into the nest only to annoy HummingBird when she wasn't paying attention to him.... I posted a thread about them in finch chat it sayd updated...pics....new finch parent or something like that, =)
