Canaries?

Post by kittani79 » Fri Aug 17, 2007 3:15 pm

Is it usually safe to house canaries and finches (specifically, gouldians) together?

I have the opportunity to adopt a yellow canary, but I don't know if my lonely gouldian girl would see this as another "finch" or just a bird taking up her perch space.

I know several instances of people housing a canary with their finches, in aviaries, but I believe people have done it in cages, as well. If your Gouldian is all alone, she will probably welcome the company. I think you will need to supply a cup of canary seed mix, since they eat a little differently than finches.

That's really the main reason I'm considering it -- I adopted the gouldian when my manager decided she was permanently bald, and I can't afford a male for her yet. (Cheapest I've found here in Atlanta was $130)

I will get her a male sometime in the next few months, but she seems pretty lonely right now. I don't think the cockatiel in the cage next door means anything to her.
