parrot finches
How many parrot finches can you put in the same aviary? I'm not asking space wise, but behavior wise. How many would get along together?

Re: parrot finches
One pair or several pairs. When you have just 2 pairs this seldom works because the dominant male will harass the weaker male too much. With several pairs the agression (if any) is spread around. Though I currently have 2 mated pairs in the same large outdoor aviary without problems. I guess it depends on the birds.
Many people say to put more females than males but I have never done this.
All other pairs are kept seperated due to wanting pure breedings. In a colony setting it is not know 100% who the genetic parent truly is. Once, I had 4 females in an aviary with 3 males and watched the dominate male mount and breed each of the 4 females in a matter of 5 minutes
Eventually they paired off but I knew the chicks all had the same daddy so had to sell them as related. Now I keep the pairs from interbreeding.

Thanks CandoAviary.
It is so nice to go off of other peoples experience.

Re: parrot finches
Hi I agree with Candace. I had trouble until they paired up. Now there are three pairs raising babies in with owls, a pair of rccbs, three spice finches and a lone quirky silver java. (He can't fit in with the other javas in their aviary) The parrot finches do well as pairs and interact as a flock and like each others company. They are pushy more than aggressive with the other species. It's mostly about bathing and mealworms. I have a veterinarian friend that has at least 30 parrot finches happily breeding together in his outdoor mixed avairy with zebras, bccbs, orange cheeks, 4 canaries and owls.
