My New Cherry Finches
Here are my two latest: two Cherry (or Plumhead) males. One has a bit of a deformed foot problem, but it doesn't keep him from perching, etc. They are already settled into their temporary cage, and act very much at home.

Re: My New Cherry Finches
Hi mick--I'm still in the house, but I think I may be in danger of being classified a 'hoarder'! My fridge and freezer have more bird food and medicines than people food, and the local grocery store thinks I am running a foster home, with all the eggs I buy each week--little do they know!

And I'm working on the hens.

Cute!
I don't know much about cherry finches -- do they have a nice song?
Fill us in on the details about them.
Thanks!

Re: My New Cherry Finches
That male is just
. I never had any interest in african silverbills, but the other day I walked into Petsmart and I saw them and they were so cool. I want a pair now. The same thing just happened with cherry finches.
Don't tell my family, but I'm planning on turning our 14 ft long x 6 ft wide x 10 ft high bar area into an aviary.
I could fit as many birds as I want in there.

Re: My New Cherry Finches
Donna knows a lot more about this species--I have to do my research yet.
In fact, I am trying to concentrate on African species, and here I am with another Australian species!
But what intrigues me is that these guys are not readily available, and I don't know why--they are lovely birds, and Donna has nothing but praise for hers, so why aren't there more of them out there?
Domenic, that space would make an awesome aviary--we'll keep your secret.

Re: My New Cherry Finches
in Australia plumheads aren't all that common in aviaries either, usually it is the more experienced breeders who have them.
II would put it down to the wow factor when someone new to the hobby walks into a shop or sale and see's the brighter colored birds alongside the more plain looking ones. they always tend to take home the more colorful species.
they are easy to breed very few requirements and best of all they are great in a mixed aviary with all other finch species.

Re: My New Cherry Finches
Misty, I don't think there are any hens available, as a guy from south Texas has been searching for a hen. He has a fawn Cherry male, but it is promised to someone else. If that deal falls thru, he said he would contact me. I'm not sure if the person I got the two males from has any more. Are you looking for some? If so, I can check around, as I am coming to Atlanta later on.
