My male Gold Breast died this am. :(

Post by Tooka » Fri Aug 13, 2010 2:01 pm

The female seems fine so far. I moved this past weekend, and I think the stress combined with my neglecting to cover their cage while they were next to an open window last night caused him to get too cold. The problem is, I know the little femaile will be lonely. This breed is not easy to find in CA and so far I've only seen them for sale in pairs. Would another breed male be at all suitable for her? I wouldn't allow breeding as I would remove any eggs. I'm just worried about her. I've already contacted the breeder to see if she will ship me another male, but I have my doubts. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

If you want to get her a buddy to keep her company, why not get a female? That way you are sure that there is no breeding going on. If you check on the Finch Information Center, in the column on the left, you can check species, and choose from the passive species. Personally I think that I would go with a society....they love to cuddle.

So sorry you lost your male Goldbreast. I hope the breeder can get another for you, just ask for one unrelated to your hen. If you can't get another Goldbreast of either sex, other waxbills such as Cordon Bleu or Fire finch will be good companions. The Society would also be fine, just a bit bigger than the other species.

Are you anywhere near Pleasanton, CA? There is a mart there this Sunday--would be worth checking out. It is posted on the calendar.

I lost my goldbreast male, too. I hated to see my girl alone, so was able to get a female Society finch to keep her company. They are great friends, and preen each other, and sleep cuddled up together every night. Societies are usually easy to find. So I'd vote for a Society! :D

I call them "the odd couple" because of the difference in size, but they don't seem to care. :)
