Green singers...courtship.

I happened to sit in a spot where I could watch the GSingers and noticed a little behavior I have seen in lovebirds, parakeets, parent birds to babies. The male was bringing food up and feeding the female. This went on for about a minute then she would return the favor.

I found this interesting since I had not witnessed this in adult finches before.

I"ve heard the male feeds the hen while she's on the nest, though I've never actually seen it with mine (yet). So I guess it's quite possible they do this ahead of time.

My male will also feed the female. Now if he would just feed her enough and build a nest.

The pair were on one of the main perches out in the open...they are bouncing in and out of the area near one of two nests are. Sooooo maybe there will be romance, eggs soon?????

They do feed each other, but most of the time it is a male that feeds a female. Because it is only a female that incubates the eggs; a male has to feed her and later the chicks. However, sometimes I see my female is feeding the male back. I remember the time when I let them free fly in the bird room and the male didn't want to go back in its cage, so I closed the cage with the hen inside, hoping that later he would get hungry and I could catch him inside the cage. Instead I saw the hen was feeding him through the bars.

I have a pair of Green singers and they have done the feeding thing but will not build a nest and when I try putting building material in the nest they throw it out. I have one open and one closed nest and plenty of nesting material avaliable. Also mine dont sing much either. I do not know the ages of them, my daughter bought them for me from a local pet store. any advice would be much appreciated

I have found that the green singers will take their time. Mone have finally built a nest.....I am waiting for her to give the go ahead and lay some eggs.

I believe that almost everyone has witnessed the same thing regarding the nest......they don't want any of our help

I just sold my only green singer male a few days ago (didn't have the room to breed him) and he was feeding my star finch female everyday. It was a very very weird sight.

I've had a pair of Green Singers for over 6 years and the last year was the most successful. I managed to get 6 chicks from them and they produced the most number of eggs. Unfortunately my hen breaks the eggs and I don't know why; I give them eggs, greens and mealworms everyday. She already broke two clutches and just started her third. (Click on camera in the signature to see live video and the gallery of their nest. It works during the day only.)
Make sure that you provide your pair with various foods and hope for the best. But not all pairs are equal and it doesn't guaranty the success. But they have a long life expectancy compared to most of the other finches and can reproduce successfully much longer.
