Worried about egg binding

Post by Sprocket » Tue Aug 17, 2010 2:18 pm

My female zebra won't eat the egg granules (Hagen I believe) or actual eggs I've provided...is there anything else I can provide her? Mineral blocks, cuttlebone...?

You can/should have cuttlebone available in the cage at all times and you can try mixing a little of the dry eggfood granules in with the moister fresh hardboiled egg (including the shell crushed up). Good luck!

Thank you, will do! I wasn't sure if finches ate cuttlebone.

I use Hagen's egg granules, too, and I found my finches would not eat them. So now I grind them up in a coffee grinder, mix them in with my eggfood, and voila--the birds scarf it down! I find that my finches don't like anything unless it is very tiny, or they can work at it to make it smaller.

My finches won't touch the cuttle bone. Some of them do eat the crushed egg shell that they have available at all times, but I anyway use a liquid calcium supplement plus vitamin D once a week in all their water sources.

I've noticed the females poo has gotten a bit more white in it lately (ever since I introduced the egg shells). Does this mean she has eaten some? It's definitely moved around and looks eaten.

I'll try crushing the egg granules down, great idea!
