What are the possible offspring from these Lady Gouldian.

Post by Delta007 » Mon Aug 30, 2010 3:51 pm

i guess the question say about my experience with lady Gouldian. Early this year I got a Pair of Lady Gouldian. I don't know anything about there background. So what I see is what I know. The cock is a RH-PB-NB and a the hen is BH-PB-NB. They laid six egg and lucky for me all of them hatched. Now I have 6(week old) baby gouldian. When I checked on them yesterday I noticed 3 off them have a darker head and 3 of them have pinkish head. Does that mean that 3 will be black head and 3 red head? Will there be any blue back? I hear ppl can tell by looking at the chicks. What am I looking for?

It appears that your male (if it's the one pictured) is a Single Factor Yellow. If there are no hidden genes all your chicks will be RH and the males will be split for BH. All chicks will be PB. The male chicks will either be Single Factor Yellow (like their dad) or Normal. All hen chicks will be either Yellow or Normal.
Only way you will get Bb is if BOTH the mother and father are split to Blue.
Best of luck

Here is the picture of the new born. 2 of them looks like they have white feather. Does this mean these two will be yellow? or its two early to tell?

How long do I wait to band them? I order band from Red Bird but didn't receive them yet. I hope I'm not getting too late banding them :?:

Depending what size you ordered they look a bit big to me for close banding without some serious lubricant and manipulating.
I usually band mine at about 8 days, yours look to be about 11 days or so from the photo.
Looks like at least two yellows and I think one might be a dilute but the color is off so its hard to tell.. :)

Its the closed band. And yes the eldest one is about 11 days. What kind of lubrication can I use. :( feel bad that I missed my window to band them .

I have banded them this old.... just go slow. The lubicant I use is good ol' spit...though every time I say that the board goes bonkers about infections and how dirty a human mouth is.... but I have never lost a chick to my 'germs' yet and have banded over a hundred. I do wash the leg off afterwards.... the chick seem to always have poop on them and I worry about the feces more. (they always seem to poop as I am banding...fear I suppose) However you can use any lubicant like KY, vaseline, baby oil, most will recomend neosporin type antibiotic ointments...just in case you scratch them. I figure the bander must be awful rough if they actually cut/scratch while banding. Or they are waiting way, way too long to do it. Closed banding is not worth injuring the chicks..... so if you don't do it soon then skip the closed banding or order larger size or split band.
Congrats on a great looking clutch =D>

I meant the size of the closed bands - do you know what size you are getting?
The chicks like good and fat to me so depending on when you get them is why I said they might be too big - if you had the bands in hand now you might be able to wiggle them on but when do you expect them to arrive?

For a beginner close banding during the appropriate window is hard enough. My friend Carol thought she broke the poor baby's leg that she tried to band later and had me come over and check it - he was fine - but it takes a bit of maneuvering and wiggling and turning.
I use KY :)

Not sure of the size. REDBIRD product sales one size band for all finches. I expect it to arrive it Tuesday or sometimes around that.

Got the band Saturday. Didn't wait for the mail man to leave. I was able to band 4 out of the 5 baby with the help of some lubrication. First time banded. I'm very happy. Will post some pic later. Thanks all.

Now don't take my word for it, I am often wrong here  , but to me it loks like 2 normal, 2 yellow, and 1 dilute.
Whether I am right or wrong they are looking real good. =D>

So if I understand right, the yellow 2 are female, the diluted one is male and the normal back may be either male or female.

Also the first chick of this pair is molting and looks like it will be a black head. If that's the case will all 5 will be black head too? or i might get some red and some black?
