What's with this Star Finch?

Post by Mez » Sun Sep 12, 2010 1:20 pm

Hi guys we have this lone star finch in at work, from the same auction as the gouldians we got (and I bought, see my other thread!) and I'm just wondering why it looks so, well, bad? Don't star finches have a bright red head? And, aren't they green?
Is this an old knackered hen, or something that might turn good? Here's a few pics, excuse the diamond doves!

I don't know about star finches but it looks to be a hen,and they also come in yellow head as yours, but can;t comment about the body colour

Body colour looks fine and to confirm Cartel's post - yes that is a Yellow-faced Star finch hen. I think she's fine, perhaps just moulting but her colouring is fine.

Here's a pic of my Yellow Star hen -

In my opinion the yellow faced stars are much better looking than the red faced.

This is moulting season for a lot of birds -- I think it's an interesting star finch -- I too like the yellow faces better (although I don't own any).

The red faces look like little vultures to me.

She looks a little ratty to me, like she's either going thru a molt or has been picked on. Is that a bald spot below her left eye? Some good food and a rest, and she will probably come right around and look wonderful again.

I like both red-faced and yellow-faced, having had both, but then I just like Stars in general. I had to rehome all but my yellow-faced breeding pair, because I needed the cage space, but one day, I'd like to have more again--they are a wonderful little bird.
