9/20 Shaftail offspring updated pictures

Post by cindy » Mon Sep 20, 2010 7:21 am

My daughter took a few shots of my Shaftails as a surprise for me, she got some really nice close ups. The two shaftail with the lighter pale orange beak are the ones when young that had a very pink beaks. They are about 6 months old right now. Mom is in the picture also.

I lost the father to the young in early August. He gave me 4 great clutches of babies and was such a good parent. We had a terrible Florida lightening and thunder storm in the middle of the night, lost power and the birds went into a panic. The nightlights had gone out and the dad must have hit something. The battery backup blew out so we will replace that so the night lights stay on when the power goes out, long enough for me to turn lanterns on for them. I use a cage light on the floor in the center between cage stands to shed a little light for them at night, works well.

I was very upset in loosing the dad, he was a clown like his one son in this clutch, very friendly. I decided to keep the 5 offspring in the flight with the mom instead of rehoming them, they all are bonded so nicely, get along and seem to enjoy the fight. We love watching them, if you get close to the cage they all come over to were you are and visit.

There are a few shows coming up and I hope to find a few nice mates to pair these with. I would love to find fawns.

Very cute. The seem quite expressive.
Pity about your male bird, but at least he left you gorgeous young.

Thank you monotwine...shaftails can go from anywhere from $25 to $35 in my area. Not to bad. My owls on the other hand were $85 each.

Thank you Janine...my aughter goes to the side of the cage and they gather near her, they are very curious birds. One of our most favorite species.

Nice pitures...I see that the one has retained the 'pink' beak. Very unique and pretty :D
