Society finches

Well, I went to a bird show today, to get 2 female societies for my males, and the guy that was selling them said that you could tell the gender by the beak shape/size and that if the head was more flat it was a female. I've never heard of that before...

Still, I ended up trusting the guy and buying two of them. But, the moment I got home, both of them started singing >_> Great. Now I have four males.

Does anyone living in or near Ottawa, Ontario have a female society finch to give/trade to me? Please?

I have a few extra females (I call them my ladies in waiting), but I won't be heading down that way again until spring

I think both male and female society finches sing. I think the only different is that when you first introduce them the male will sing (toot) and dance around the female and the female will stay quiet. But now that I'm thinking about it, I think that only confirms the singing bird is a male, the quiet one could still be either male or female. I have three society birds, and when I got my last two, I made sure to put the female in the cage first, to see if I could confirm our older society was a male. He buffed-up and danced around her, he danced around the other male society a little, but concentrated mostly on the female. After that first introduction, all my society sing, to each other or just in general. Mind you, I am also taking the word of the man I got my last two society finches from, and judging from the state my birds were in when I got them, I wouldn't trust his word. You have me worrying now, maybe I have three males!

I am pretty sure that only the male society finches sing...I had a pair a few years ago and only the male sang.

Societies are difficult to sex, but there is one sure way to tell: males sing, and hens lay eggs! Hens will chirp, but they don't sing.

Sorry but males & females sing , males are better at it , males well sing and do the dance to outher males. You can say, if one has eggs its female.

Kinda glad to hear male and female society sing - in a little denial about my pretty Peyto maybe being a male, but I guess it wouldn't matter anyways with me and my flock!
