Thank you, Candace and Cindy. They are such appealing looking birds and they sound equally appealing personality-wise! I have to add them to my list of "must haves" along with a pair of gouldians and Forbes and Lutino Parrot Finches.

I was looking at the pictures and really like the rubinos but they are ALL so beautiful. =P~

I've been looking at these a lot lately but everytime I see them at the fairs I'm like :\

I just don't trust anybody anymore with large birds in our area after all the horror stories I've heard. Can anyone recommend a breeder in this area?

Cindy I can't wait to see yours :)

Misty, the friend I am buying them from uses the same avain vet I use. If there is ever any quesstion in regards to the health of his birds he takes them in. He is also putting together another unrelated pairs of pinks...I am also getting one of those babies. Another friend of his that has some of his birds also breeds bourkes and I am going to see her tomorrow to see what she has. I only will go through people I truly trust for hookbills. I used to handfeed parrotlets for him and know his practices with the birds.

Misty, I am seeing both breeders today and will ask if they ship. I know one uses the airlines alot to ship birds out, he does parrotlets, bourkes, kakarikis and linnies (the colors are stunning).

I'll let you know what they say and get back to you this afternoon.

Misry,
I highly recommend Ray and here is his web site.He is in the NC mountains. I have had scarlets shipped to me and can attest that his birds are fabulous. I would not hestitate to get bourkes from him when I am ready for them. Also here is a link that he furnished to the mutations, forums, etc.

Candace, funny you should mention him, the lady that raises bourkes recommends him also. She said he does great scarlet mutations.

Misty, I spoke with me friend he will air ship so I will pm you his info.

I got to see my babies today, the pink is very deep. They look wonderful and will be DNA tested this week.

The woman (his friend) loves bourkes and is building stock in pinks and rosey and she also has normals. I may get one or two normals split to pink and split to rosey in early Novemeber. My goal is to have 2 pair to start and and then build from there.

I mentioned him on the second page of this post also
I always recommend him as he has the best in the US (IMO)and is a very consciencious breeder. Helpful and a mentor to others also :D
I have gotten some from here too,my first pair, they are nice also.

There is a lot to be said for supporting the small hobby breeder. I am glad you found a good one that is so close and that you can visit your babies as they develope, that is a real plus in my book :D

Good and bad news today...Saw the bourkes female in the flight so went to check her nest. She hatched all 5 eggs but two of the chicks were dead in a corner...the other three look healthy enough and should make it I hope...no reason for the deaths but with 5 maybe they weren't getting their share of food...Shame,but I'm pretty confident she will raise the rest...fingers crossed.

Sorry for your loss Paul. Is this her first clutch? if so it might be due to inexperience and you might have to help her the first couple of times by pulling the first two babies right after the third egg hatches and hand feed them out. A spoon with the edges bent up works well.

I usually don't pull the babies out of the nest early, I try to leave them with the parents for about a week to two weeks. I pull earler than that is there is a reason for concern.

I've seen some lovebirds do as your bourkes just did and consistanly only feed out the two older chicks, tossing or doing away with the younger ones that hatch. That's when I stepped in early on and pulled when they hatched, leaving the two older ones with their mom until right before the eyes opened then I pulled them to handfeed out. Other pairs would feed the whole clutch.

No timefor hand feeding...when my birds lay they're on their own.I don't disturb them at all...in an mixed aviary environment it's hard to check on nests without disturbing all the rest.

Perhaps her next clutch she will do better. Hope the other babies she has left continue to do well.
