Penguins????? Continental CFW's

Post by cindy » Sun Oct 10, 2010 12:56 pm

Went to a show today on my own...usually hubby is with me. I did show great restraint that was until I got to the finches.

My eyes zeroed in on two specific zebra mutaions I had searched for and one mutation I thought I would never find!

PENGUINS!!!!! They were fat little white cheeked sweeties...I promised myself no more zebras except one fawn male if I found one. The breeder had 2 females and one male lightly pied and crested....all I could think is "mine, mine, mine" Got those for $10 ea.

Next I about fainted but remembered I drove myself! Black Cheek Continential CFW. Got a pair...omg they are lovely!

I also got a new female shaftail to go with my favorite male offspring from my original pair.

And a Florida Famcy male to go with the soon to be hatched hopefully there is a female in the clutch bay from my one FF and Isabela pair. $7 for him.

I was this close to getting a fawn Black cheek from one breeder and a fawn female from another. The fawn female had her baby beak color still and was fluffed, the breeder said she is banded and a yr old. (we all know the beak does not stay the baby color for a yr)You can buy her if she doesn't make it stick her in a plastic bag and bring her to the next show. Ok, I am blonde but not dumb...this was not the usual guy I deal with it was someone else I never saw before....Passed on that.

John, listen closely...go get a paper bag, sit down and start taking deep breaths in and out. They had Crimson Seed Catchers for $200 a pair...2 pairs and she said they started dropping eggs!!! If I had the room I would have gotten a pair. Beautiful!

Now there were more finches at this little show than they have had in the past. There was a new vendor who had a variety an lots of finches. I asked his owl price and he said $80 each...not bad but he lost me at the next statement. He told me he had two extremely rare mutations of finches. Drum roll, it was a hybrid between and owl and a Black cheek and the other was a owl and a star mix. OMG...was it the blonde hair thing again that made him think I would jump at this or what????? The clencher was the price, $125 each. This guy was asking more for them than the cost of an owl!!!! [-X [-X [-X. The star mix was such a muddy looking bird, sad to ruin a lovely star appearance by trying to hybrid breed species for a buck.

Needless to say I had had enough, took my prizes home and stopped to see my bourke babies...oh so cute.

I know that feeling when you at the bird show and you say to yourself "Ok I am here to only get 1 or 2 birds that's it!" then you end up leaving with like 5! Sounds like you got some goodies today, hope they bring you future success! And as for the breeders who were trying to pull a fast one on you... Its just a shame... [-X [-X The way they will try to take advantage of someone if they "think" they don't know anything the birds they are viewing. I have seen the exact same thing at every show I have been to.

Aww a southern Floridian...I am originally from Ft Myers and come to Naples often. Do you breed anything other than gouldians?

It is a shame that these "breeders" try to scam people. The only mixed mutation of a species that is interesting is the zebra.

I need to find some penguins at the next birdmart. I need a new bloodline, to get beyond the 2nd generation. My 2 penguin hens are mother and daughter.

I forgot to mention, on the male mop head (crested) penguin, his cheeks are white and he has no flanking but the beak is an dark red...they told me he is a male he had a little pied on his back and the edges of his wings are white....the two females have light orange beaks and are definately penguins.

Bird fairs are a great way to spend a Sunday :D Glad you found some treasures.
The last fair I was at they had 2 vendors seeling hybrids. One for $10 and the other for $ 8. They were unique looking and I guess for the pet only owner they offer something different. I would be so afraid that the hybrid lines would get so out of hand though. For that reason I am always leary of buying from those sources.

Thank you everyone...Monique I'll post pictures in a day or so, give them time to settle in.

Candace, $10 to even $15 is not to bad for a hybrid but $125.00...it was a bit upsetting.

Congrats!!! =D> You stumbled upon some treasure at this mart haven't you? I can't wait to see some pics of your new arrivals.

We have a bird mart coming up in 7 days and I desperately need another owl, but I have NO CASH right now. What am I to do? I'm panicking looking for something to sell to raise enough money. I really don't want to wait until the next bird mart, that's a long ways away.

Is this what your male penguin looks like?
http://www.efinch.com/birdpix/pengbc.jpg

It is a black cheek penguin. The penguin supreses the black cheek so the bird has a white cheek.
