Silver Gouldian Chick? FLEDGED 10/28

Post by CandoAviary » Tue Oct 12, 2010 1:53 pm

This chick has me puzzled. Whatever it is, the parents are feeding it almost too well

Looks silver to me - what are the parents?
Could be a WB or LB SF Pastel Blue cock..

Can't wait to see this one colour up. I'd lean towards it being a pastel, due to the darker eyes.

Here's Mom and Dad. These were both in the bulk purchase I got in February 2010 and don't know their genetic background. Only one egg hatched in this clutch and that's the whopper chick. He is huge compared to most. Maybe because it is just the one and they are stuffing him like a turkey
Hen BH PB GB could be, must be split for blue and probably lilac breast
Dad BH WB SB sf

Pastel would make me very happy....I would love a BH pastel, I bought one and would love another =D>

Pastel's have dark beaks, not pink - my guess is it is a WB or LB SF Pastel Blue (aka Silver, aka SF Yellow Blue) cock.

Just curious too - if you don't know their genetic background, how do you know they're not possibly related

I could tell who was related by their bands. The girl did furnish me the records on the bands that they were wearing. Most had the seagreen colored# plastic bands on one leg and a family colored band on the other. Some even had NFSS closed bands that were some of her breeders that she had bought to start her lines. And some she did have the parents info on them but not which was the hens or which was the cocks colors. So that didn't help me much. Many times when they are your own birds you know who the male and who the female is....with me taking on so many new birds...I found it confusing. Her system is one I have adopted though. She would take a binder ring and write the parents genetics on plastic coated paper and use a whole punch and attached it to the cage. When they sold she would unclip the ring and send the genetics with the person. However when I got them they were all put into 3 cages for transport and the tags and binder rings were all in the bag....so even though they were furnished to me I didn't know who's tag belonged to who. However, I also keep a file on the birds so when birds are moved or tags moved, I still have the info I can pass on. But for quick reference when you have over 40 breeding cages it comes in handy. It is much like the breed cards many hook onto the front of the nest boxes but I seem to always knock those off. Anyway this pair for sure is not related. Many were and most I set up with my own hens or cocks as they were too closely related for my liking. At least I assumed they were related as without exact records that is the way I treat them. There were only 2 pair that I set up together that came from her (out of 37 birds I think it was) She sold most all of the offsprings she bred just keeping the nice ones that she had planed to breed in the future.
I am glad I did pair these 2 up now because this chick is very interesting :D

Ahhh - well it's good that she family banded and provided SOME info on them then :)
I thought you meant you just got a load of birds with no info at all! lol

He looks like a white breasted pastel which would appear Silver. I bet he'll look just like his father ;) Love that color =P~

That little boy is going to pop! At least it won't take long before you'll know the back color for sure. I still haven't produced a silver, so I'm jealous. Just about everything else, but no silvers. That's wonderful that not only are the parents willing to raise just the one, but that they are devoting so much effort to it!
