Best way to have a tame finch is to handfeed them :D Here are 3 societies and different mutations of gouldian chicks. They never develope a fear of you if you feed from very young and continue to work with them. Though I encourage mine to be birds and release them with other finches and have little interactions with them. They will resort to acting like normal finches...but always seem to be very trusting of me forever. Of course if kept with other handraised and time spent daily handling them they will remain tame. I just don't have the desire for hand tamed finches...I am too busy :D But if you do want a tame one it is very much possible. You must learn how to hand feed first though.

That's so awesome! The little birdies sure are secure with you, even with puppy being around.

That is Hubby, Tom, giving his hand at feeding and handling the birds...... He can't resist the babies :D
My little dog is with me in the aviary everyday and the birds are very use to seeing her. She is pretty trust worthy with them but I would never leave her with them unsupervised [-X
Check out this post made back in April 2009 with Zebras..... My little dog will start begging like a bird to get some of the handfeeding formula. Pictures of this on page 2 of the post.... I just love critters  http://finchforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=5 ... it=Chelsea

The pics by candace are excellent!
But just a note to the person who started the thread,Candace birds were hand reaed/feed from birth, they are trying to tame a bird that is not use to being handeld, there is a big difference there, dont expect the same results as candace has had

 Tom says he does not love birds...but he loves me and I love birds so they go hand and hand. But.... I can tell he has a big heart for them, the twinkle in his eyes when he messes with the babies and he is the first to come to their rescue when trouble arises.
It got chilly here the other night and took the morning off to plastic the aviaries........... Yep, he loves them

That is why I said that that is the easiest way, albeit not the only way. She could always breed the ones she has and handfeed the offspring or find a breeder near her that would help her with a hatchling. You can tame an adult finch to a degree but they won't be as tame as a hand reared simply because handreared don't develope the fear factor of you... unless of course you scare them #-o

Well, as I already mentioned in the first post, the finch that I am taming is handfed. So he's not afraid of me at all. The problem is, whenever he's out of his cage, he freaks out at the slightest noises and flies into windows. How could I help prevent that?

I suggest you go into a small room (to start out with) that has few windows like a bathroom. Cover the window and any mirrors. Take a book and just let the finch fly around while you read (or take a small t.v. or a phone if you don't like to read).

Put a little seed in your hand after a bit and see if you can get him to eat from your hand.

The first thing is just establishing a strong trust.

I've done this with Diamond Doves but not finches -- hopefully it willk work the same. :)

I have noticed with handfeds that they all have their own personalities. Some are very laid back and are not easily startled while others are very nervous and flighty.
Most handfeds once not handled several times a day will become more birdlike. To keep them very tame you must handle , feed (treats) several times a day. I am sure if you spend more time with the finch and as Anna suggested, doing it in a smaller /safer room at first will certainly help, but sometimes they prefer to be birds and are very hard to tame. Much like a cat...some are impossible to train to do tricks....they just want to be cats :D
Good luck in your endeaver

Hey - I wouldn't do it in your bathroom, the room is unfamiliar to your bird and there are a lot of hard surfaces and tricky angles (sink, toilet, bathtub, etc.). I'd try to tame your bird in a room his use too. I would cover the window by maybe tacking up a sheet.

With our parrot finch, I just sit down to work or read a book, and open his cage door and let him come out on his own. The window in the room is old fashion and made up of diamond-shaped planes of glass (if that makes sense), so my birds don't really fly into it. I try and wait him out and let him find his own way back in the cage. My male society is catching on faster then my parrot finch, however. I think this way he'll feel safer and calmer coming out of his cage.

I would try opening up the cage and maybe putting his food or a treat (fruit, something he likes) just outside the door, so his confidence builds slowly.
