Oh Goody!

Post by Hilary » Tue Oct 19, 2010 11:47 pm

Was checking out some of my young gouldians who are coloring out, and noticed three youngsters from a pair I put together for the first time this year. Dad is BH PB/LB dilute split to blue, and mom is BH PB/LB GB probably split to blue.

The young hen is BH PB GB - very pretty.

One boy is BH PB dilute - just like dad.

I had to take a second look at the second boy. Yellow body, obviously SF (blue band around head), lilac breast and head coloring out to be the same grey you see in BH dilutes. Not the white you see in yellows, but the grey you see in the dilutes showing green. The lilac made it possible. He's going to be a lovely, pastel bird, and the first I've bred with this coloring. I love surprises! Here's a link to what he'll look like:

Hilary,

It's impossible that you can get a yellow male (even single factor) from that pair. They can produce yellow hen, but not male.

Did you have them together with other goulds? Maybe someone dropped an egg in the nest, or the hen cheated her mate.

No, I only breed with pairs in their own cages, so nobody cheated. 8) Males and females are kept separate until I set them up in pairs, just to make sure I can be 100% certain the bloodlines are those I planned.

A full purple breast would have resulted in a dilute green body, just like dad and brother, but the lilac enables the yellow. I double-checked Matos' genetics calculator to make sure I wasn't seeing things, and given these parents there is a 6.25% chance of the BH LB YB combination. Are you factoring in the lilac when you say it's impossible?

The forcastor I use says it is possible. 3.11% chance.
That is one beautiful bird. I have the RH and the OH with that body color but not the black head ....yet. I am working on it. I love the grey heads anyway but on the yellow sf...awesome :D

Congratulations Hilary! That's very exciting. =D>

I'm now confused on a Gould I bought last year (sold to me as a yellow) but he has a purple breast and a gray head. Does that mean he is a lilac breast?

Liz, why don't you post a pic!! :D As far as I know, only lilac and white breast will show a yellow back on a dilute bh. Just like my new guy, if he had a purple breast he'd have a dilute green back. So your guy must be Lilac I would think :)

Congrat's Hilary. That's a gorgeous color combo!

Okay - I don't want to hijack Hilary's thread but I've shown this guy before and nothing was said about possibly being a lilac breast. He seems to match the photo in the link that Hilary posted above. He is now a pure yellow back (no green spots) and I am entering him in the birdshow this weekend.

Can't forget him :) He's got to be a Lilac breast, maybe a little darker Lilac, Genetically and physically, he looks like one to me. Come on you genetic people. Gorgeous bird and good luck with him!

Hilary can see what a beauty she will have :)

I would definitely call that lilac! That's what my kid should look like "when he grows up". Gorgeous bird, Liz!

As I understand it, yellow back can only have a purple breast if he's a double-factor. Yours clearly isn't with the blue band. A double-factor would also have a white head, which again yours clearly doesn't have.

I have noticed a big difference in the shades of my lilac breast. Some so light they look pink/rose and some on the darker side but against a purple breast you can tell the difference.

That is definately a lilac and a beautiful one at that. Maybe nothing was said before because it sometimes is so hard to detect the true colors in a photo. Many times lilacs will photograph as purple and purples as blue :?
Beautiful bird you have there Liz :D

Wow :!: Again, my apologies for showing off my bird when this is Hilary's thread.

But thank you so much too everyone and I sure didn't mean to say anyone should have said he was a lilac breast first time round (in my past posting). I thought he was 'just' a dilute showing as yellow - with no idea why. Now I know why he's showing as a yellow - due to the lilac breast!

I'm still learning so much through this "FFF" (fabulous Finch Forum)! =D>
