New zebbie! :D What is she?

Post by Ameza » Sun Oct 24, 2010 11:30 am

Hi guys!

I found this little beauty at the petshop today and couldn't resist :) She is so pretty. I am not sure what colour she is though. At the shop I thought she might be silver but when I took her home I saw that she is more cream/fawn coloured. She has lacings in her wings. So could she be fawn isabel? What do you think?

I don't know what she is and couldn't understand a word written on your blog BUT I enjoyed the pictures and loved the bookshelf cages you are building - the little splash of green on the back was perfect :)

Thank you ^_^

I am betting she is isabel, at least more likely than FF. Though I have never had much experience with these mutations before... #-o

Ameza she is very pretty. I am not much good at the mutations either, but she looks very similar to one of my hens. My hen is a fawn with pied gene's and although she does not display white patches she produces them in her babies.

Time will tell.

Have to agree with the Isabel theory. That mutation seems to be a little "muddier" than the "clean" white FF's have. Don't know about the Fawn part, looks a little too white for that in the second pic you posted. Very pretty little girl indeed.

Thank you all, I am so proud of her :D

I was just guessing with the fawn isabel since she is so much fawn-cream coloured. But since I have never seen a gray isabel she could just as well be one :)

I am puzzled by one thing though, the pictures I have seen of isabels don't have tear marks. Which is also why I thought she was a silver in the store, thought she is much too brown to be so. Do isabels usually not have tear marks or does it just vary?

Really don't know much about the Isabel mutation since it's not very common here in the states. I know with some of our Florida Fancies, the single factors can display some measure of black markings, although usually rather muted. I have absolutely no idea if there is such an animal as a single factor Isabel. If not then perhaps there is another mutation at work in her genetic makeup.

I should have read up on the mutation before firing off a reply this morning. Didn't realize that Isabels were broken down into Fawn and Gray categories. I was thinking in reference to FF's, where the brightness of the white is determined by whether the bird is either a single or double factor. I apologize for speaking out of turn.

Roy Beckham explains the difference between the two mutations very nicely on his website. Consider the following link.

Well thank you anyhow :)

I don't think there are anything like single and double factor in isabel. I think from what I have finally read that they are recessive and don't show splits. Too bad, since it will be a hard time to find a guy like her. Isabels are extreamly rare here and I have never seen any ff here either.

But thank you all for the help :) I think it is certain that she is isabel, either grey or fawn not sure which, and the tear mark might be because of other genetic background. Unless there are some cream-ish silvers running around haha :D

And I just got another beautiful finch today :) She is just 6 weeks old but is bigger than my other one. The isabel happens to be rather small. She is a lightback female, split for bc.
They get very well along :)
