My Owls Tail....Why Does It Look Like This?

Post by FeatherHarp » Fri Nov 05, 2010 7:10 pm

My male Owl has had a pretty normal looking tail until the last 3 weeks or so and then it seemed one by one the feathers started going kitty wampus. Does this have anything to do with the breeding cycle or nutrition? I hope it is not a sign of an illness coming on.

Even though he has been taking occasional turns sitting in the nest the female's tail feathers are all straight and normal so it can't be because of that. I am stumped.

Any thoughts on this? :?:

Here is the photo of his tail: Image

The only thing that I can think of is that maybe he has been pushing his backside up into the wall of the nest and she hasn't.

I think "kitty wampus" is the best way to say "wonky" that I've ever heard. I will be using it! But I have no idea why the tail feathers would do such a thing.

If he hasnt already got a name I think Chopper would be appropriate, his tail looks like helicopter blades :D
Quite attractive.

Well...gee wiz you guys....here I am worried my Owl is sick and you just make fun of his tail feathers!

Don't you know how to talk Minnesotian? [-X

The official "Urban Dictionary" says that Kitty Wampus means:

The state of an object being physically different or normal then expected, especially related to geometric alignment.

Now somebody tell me...what the heck does Wonky mean.....is that a Canadian term? 8)

You guys are something else....scheesch!

As for my male Owl whose name happens to be "Buzz" his propeller tail is appropriate. :D

I think ol' Buzz is into haute couture.

It's obvious he doesn't want to be just "any" owl and is making a statement with the fantastic arrangement of his tail feathers. :D

You just described Wonky perfectly!! =D>

When he moults next time, the feathers will grow in nice and straight - at least for 5 minutes!

LOL... I would say Buzz is taking his duties of incubating to the extreme. He must be positioning himself just right and then squirming in rotation to get every egg just where he wants it to be.... then he must set like that for a long period of time to 'set' his feathers into the Propeller -Doo :D
