Re: Question
Different breeders use different bands. If its an aluminum band with a year that usually means its a NFSS (national finch and soft bill society) band or some sort of club's band that tells you the year that baby was born. If it is a plastic band of any color that is used by breeders usually to tell what baby came from what parent. It helps them not to inbreed, and it makes it easier for them to keep records, or look at in the cage and see who's who. If you type something like "banding" or "banding record keeping" into the search bar on this forum it will bring up some related topics that have been discussed previously.

Re: Question
NFSS closed bands will have NFS, the year, the band size, and a number. If you buy a bird with a closed NFSS band, you can contact NFSS to find out the breeder of that bird. Then if you can contact that breeder, you can get alittle history on the bird.
I have some birds that came from Canada, I think the bands say AACA, year, band size, and number, just like the NFSS bands, and you can also find out from them who bred the bird.
Many breeders order their own bands, with say their initials, and a number for each bird. They may or may not have the year on them, may or may not be traceable (usually not).
Split plastic bands are great for keeping track of family bloodlines, but serve no purpose as far as proving the age of a bird, or even the breeding history, but they are a great way to keep from accidentally inbreeding your birds.

Re: Question
You were close Sally. Our nationally registered bird bands in Canada have the letters AAC and then the year and possibly (but not necessarily) other letters for the owner.Sally wrote:I have some birds that came from Canada, I think the bands say AACA, year, band size, and number, just like the NFSS bands, and you can also find out from them who bred the bird.
Example:
AAC10 GGA76
Which stands are:
Avian Advancement Council of Canada 2010 - Gardeness Gardens & Aviaries (bird number) 76
If the owner does not want coded bands then the size of the band will be included, such as:
AAC10 76C

Re: Question
Thanks for correcting that, Liz. I have these three birds that came from Canada, and I would told that the two that have CFS bands are from a bird club in Canada. I contacted someone about it long ago, but never heard back from them.
So the difference is that NFSS doesn't allow us to add or change anything on the bands, where in Canada, the AACA allows you to add your own breeder information. Do they then keep records on the bands, so someone could trace a bird they bought?
Male Strawberry – 06 red AAC 78
Male Strawberry – 08 green CFS 31 – Male Strawberry - 08 green CFS 33

Yes the AACC does keep record of whom every band was sold to.Sally wrote:Thanks for correcting that, Liz. The CFS probably stands for the Canadian Finch & Softbill Society (birdclub) and you should contact the Ring Registrar who is Rado at: rado<dot>pagac<at>rogers<dot>com He should be able to tell you who the rings where issued/sold to and hopefull their email address. I would be very interested to hear back what he says as I have a guess as to whom the breeder would be for the two 2008 birds.
For the 06 red AAC 78 - follow this link and fill in the form and submit it directly to the AACC.

Re: Question
It's probably much more likely that AAO are initials of some sort that meant something to the breeder (perhaps even the breeder's initials) and these were custom bands.

Re: Question
It sounds like the way you describe the band the numbers run together..
Most of the time if the band indicates the year, the year is separate from the ID number and in the case of the NFSS bands, the year is stamped vertically on the band as opposed to horizontally for the actual band number, which helps make it more distinguishable/keep it separate as the year stamp.
