Silver gouldian inheritance
I have a question that puzzles me. From a nest of 7 eggs, I got 7 chicks that doing well and started coming out of the nest yesterday.
The father is a GB/RH/LB and the mother a YB/OH/WB. The pleasant surpeie is that the colors of these 7 chicks are 3 greens, 1 yellow and ....... 3 silver chicks. To my knowledge none of the parents carry any blue genes so this was a huge surprise and wondering if the following nests will have silvers chicks as well.
My question is whether you know if the green and the yellow chick if mated to a blue or silver birds will give blue r silver? In other words do they carry any gens for silvr or blue?
By the way I am using a supplement in their eggfood that for the first time this year I get mostly 7 egg nests or 6 and they all hatch and thrive. They also leave their nests a week to 10 days erlier than usual!

Re: Silver gouldian inheritance
If the GB male is split to blue, and your YB female is also split to blue it is possible to get silver males. Someone gave me this website that will calculate the possibilities, and I have been using it a lot lately. Maybe it will help you figure out your possibilities.

you cannot find it in the States. I know a small quantity was imported last year and I think they run out of it a long time ago.

All of your chicks will be lilac breasted. IF both of your parents are split to Blue because of their breasts being lilac, if you have a SFYellowBlue AKA SFPastel Blue male the body will be visually silver. You will also get SFYellow males that will be visually yellow because of the lilac breast and SFYellow/Blue. Hens will be either Blue, Green or Normal/Blue.
Tiffany can explain this sooo much better
... Oh Tiffany ....
It's all going to depend on whether both the birds are lilac breasted and or split to Blue. There are many combinations to consider. Basically if you want a blue bird both parents need the blue "gene" and if you want a silver both parents need to have the blue and yellow "genes".My question is whether you know if the green and the yellow chick if mated to a blue or silver birds will give blue r silver? In other words do they carry any gens for silvr or blue?

debbie276, the female is white breasted and basically I am wondering whetehr to sell the greens or not. I mean if they are split to blue?
You guys are going crazy about this supplement!!! It's called Breedmax and ABBA seeds there was carrying it, if you want to check it out. It is a Belgian made product with lots of protein that finches really need and thrive on.

I know your parent is white breasted but I thought you were asking about the female chicks which will all be lilac split to white. Your females chicks will be Green and Green/Blue. There is no visual way tell which are which though. If they are split to blue you could get blue chicks if paired with a blue.
If you pair a lilac or white breasted Green/Blue hen to a silver (YellowBlue) that is purple breasted you could get:
males:
SFYellowBlue AKA "pastel" AKA SF Pastel Blue (visually blue)
SFYellow/Blue AKA "dilute" AKA SF Pastel Green (visually green)
hens:
YellowBlue AKA "silver"
Yellow/Blue
If you pair her to a white or lilac breasted bird you could get:
males:
SFYellowBlue AKA "silver" AKA SF Pastel Blue (visually white)
SFYellow/Blue AKA SF Pastel Green (visually yellow)
hens:
YellowBlue AKA "silver"
Yellow/Blue

Re: Silver gouldian inheritance
I'd bet that a portion of the chicks will be Lilac/White and a portion will be White Breasted.
It is very uncommon to have a DF Lilac bird unless you are actively working to produce them, and it would take a lot of background knowledge on the birds parents' to know for the sure the bird was DF.
Every single Lilac bird I have is /White because it is really my first generation of them and pairing to White is the easiest way to get/find them.
I have two Purple/Lilac birds now, though, and intend to pair them together next year which will produce my first ever DF Lilacs

Indeed he was!!! Wondering if these people really want to do business?!!!
It's a shame because all over Europe is very popular. Everybody here especially canary breeders are crazy about it.
There are a ton of products that you guys in the States never hear about from what I've noticed.
