Fledgling question

Post by G8love4finches » Thu Nov 18, 2010 9:55 pm

Hello everyone....I wanted to know if their are any special water or food needs for fledgling Societies....I have 4 babies that fledged the other day and seem to be begging for food quite successfully from their parents...I wanted to know if they need extra water & food dishes or if the parents will make sure they find the existing dishes....I had a 5 week old Gouldian who died overnight last month and thought that it may have been due to dehydration...I really want to make sure these babies make it OK
Thanks for your help

I always make sure that my fledglings have millet to learn how to feed themselves with, the parents also seem to like to start there. Other than that the babies will follow their parents and learn to fend for themselves that way. While they are weaning they will continue to beg (and more often than not, much longer), and will get all moisture they need directly from their parents, same as when they were in the nest.
I hope this makes sense and helps to ease your worried mind.
BTW pics are always more than welcome

Just make sure you have enough/LOTS of food and water out for the parents. I also put a very shallow dish on the bottom of the cage with miracle meal and later I add commercial dry egg food. This makes it easy for the fledglings to start to eat. If you have a newspaper floor, you can sprinkle the food on the newspaper, where they will forage for it.
