Pet Store Birds

Post by CaliforniaZebraFinch » Mon Nov 22, 2010 9:54 pm

Just curious....

I purchased my birds from a local pet store. Male, Penguin and Female, CFW. I want to know what types of babies they would produce. I used a genetic forecaster and these were my results:

50.0% Females >> Gray / Penguin ( Genotype >> Z , W ; pi+,pi )
50.0% Males >> Gray / Penguin , CFW ( Genotype >> Z bc+ , Z bc ; pi+,pi )

The only information I entered is shown in the image below.

Is their still possibilities of other variations popping up, lets say for example a normal gray?
A pair of Zebra finch. Male is Penguin and Female is Pied.

One thing that I have learned with zebras is you don't know what will appear. I have had birds that don't look like either parent. So if there was a gray back in the lineage, there is a chance that a gray may "pop up."

Gary is right :D Even if we know their recent lineage, all bets are off when it comes to zebbies. They seem to hold onto their genetics stream much longer than any other species.

I agree with Gary and Janine - colours can come from out of the blue with Zebra finches... from generations back.
