What kind???????????

Post by lildove » Sat Dec 04, 2010 8:47 pm

Would anyone happen to know what kind of Finch this is???? And I believe its a Female... I tried to put her in with my 2.. But it didnt go well.. My male is very protective over the cage. So I had to take her back out and put her back in her own cage...... She was giving to my cause the guy had lost the other one this morning.. ( They are never home to feed them) So I believe that is how the other one passed away..

But I always feed mine. And they are still doing good.

It is a society finch. It's really hard to tell their sexes apart. One of the best ways is to see if it sings. If it sings then it is a male, if it does not sing then it is most likely a female, but that is not always 100% true. There could be multiple reasons why your male is not fond of its new friend. It could be a male and he feels that his territory is being invaded. It could be that he is not used to this new bird and decided to lash out. There could be a thousand reasons that we will never know. My advice would be to let them be able to see each other from different cages for a week or so and then maybe try to put him/her with your other 2. Hopefully other people on the forum will have advice as well.

Well to my surprised I was total wrong.. Its not a female.... Its a male.... Its upstretched neck and fluffed feathers.. So now I see why the other male was territory to him.

The fellow you got it from probably bought it at a pet store. Very likely it was caged with African Silverbills. Someone forgot to change the sign on the cage when the Silverbills sold, or else just didn't know which was which! :D I have them giving me the wrong name for finches all the time at many pet stores. You would think they'd be in the business of knowing what they are selling! [-X

Definately a Bengalese/Society. Does anyone know the origins of them? I heard they were a domesticated fertile hybrid with spice finch and I think some sort of munia. Not actually a wild species.

Lildove, African finches are just about any finch/waxbill that has its original wild population distribution in Africa if that helps you to identify African finches  . There are loads of them and most are just beautiful, but I am bias as they are some of my favourites.

Society finches are a domestic bird, meaning there are no current wild populations of societies. I believe their origins are unknown, they may have been at one time a wild species (that has now gone extinct in the wild) or they may have been breed from caged wild birds, and thereby, never existed in the wild in their current form.

They were first breed in Japan where the birds were considered sacred. Each family (that breed the birds) would develop their own markings and colourations, and the birds of those marking/colourations would be considered something akin to the family's crest. No family would breed birds with markings/colourations that represented another family. The Japanese that breed society took a lot of pride in their birds, and considered raising them to be a great art.

Beautiful eh. One of the reasons I love societies.
