Juvenile Gouldians

Here are some photos of my Gouldians, when they were juveniles. First photo, there are still in the nest obviously:

Here they are a several weeks later. You can tell the male on the left, as it has a little more color. They looked like this for a few months.


Now they look like this (mine took over 6 months to look like adults):


The tin foil is part of a little heat shelter I made for them. I have a ceramic reptile heat lamp overhead and the foil helps keep that corner warm. I have my Gouldians in my sunroom that can get down to the high 50s / low 60s on cold nights. But the Gouldian cage is next to the heater and they also have this ceramic heat lamp so they stay warmer than the rest of the room.

Beautiful colours. Around where i live gouldians are like gold dust, both rare and expensive.

"Normal" Red or Black headed (Green backed) Gouldians sell for $50 - $75 here in the Philadelphia area, if you get them from breeders at a bird show. Other colors, like Blue and Yellow backed go for more. It always amazes me that people have even bothered to breed less colorful mutations like Silver Gouldians, which are more expensive, when the normals are already so beautiful.

It's funny, when I decided I wanted to have some babies I wasn't interested in breeding the normals. I wanted firstly the most variety I could get out of a pair, which is why I got my pastel male. I was also more interested in having more of the hard to find colors, now that I have bred only for blues, silvers, pastels which I still think are very beautiful. I miss having the normal colors. I started off with a normal RH pair and that combination of colors is what got me interested in these birds in the first place
