Winter seed
Hey guys. For those who house their finches outside I was wondering if you do anything special to their seeds to help give them more resistance to the cold. Since I am in Florida I do have my bird outside, but it can get chilly in the winter here. They all have heat lamps on their cage at night when it gets chilly, and also get covered up. But I was wondering if anyone feeds their finches like extra oily seeds? Or like extra canary seed, or jute, or any thing like that. Any advice would be appreciated.

Re: Winter seed
I feed the finches more seed as they consume more with cooler temperatures just burning calories to stay warm. I actually have birds with babies fledging right now in below freezing temps...I do have the aviary plastic covered with a radiator heater that keeps it from dropping below 50. Daytime temp with the sun shinning brings the temp back up to 80% so the cold temp is only for a few hours in the wee hours of the morning.
I am feeding a breeding/rearing diet since they are raising chicks which include the finch seed mix with added canary grass, oat groats, sunflower chips, and eggfood both dry and fresh fhardboiled egg. Also with the cool weather the fresh greens or sprouts stay fresh enough to place in the aviary without too much worry of spoiling like they will in the humid summer heat.
