Galvanized Steel Bird Cage

Post by LisaB53 » Thu Dec 16, 2010 3:43 pm

Hello All,

I am looking for another divided bird cage. I came across one that is 36" X 18" X 18" and is made from galvanized steel. All my other cages are powder coated and I know to avoid anything with lead but is galvanized steel a good choice for a finch cage?

Thanks,
Lisa

I use galvanized after welding "hardware cloth" and have kept finches for at least 2 1/2 years in this type of cage with no problem. Finches don't tend to chew on the wire, so I personally don't think it's an issue, as to what type of wire you use. Some folks even paint the wire, and the finches are not known for chewing off the paint either, so I don't see any problem.

Thanks Fran,

My two keets have free flight in the bird room and would be prone to nibbling on the cage at times so I wanted to be certain before I made an investment in this cage.

The galvanized steel is fine. All the manufactures have to say about it is to brush new wire with a hard brush to remove any loose galvanizing and you can wash it with vinegar water mix if it is brand spanking new.

Most people here keep all bird types in aviarys made from it without the powder coating.

I have two small aviary's both made with the galvinized hardware cloth no problems for finches but if you keep hook bills they can get lead poison from the wire and welds as they use there mouth to get around in the cage,
