Here is a pic of my Star finch



I was so happy when I heard him singing early this morning, because I wanted a male so much and the two they had were too young to tell the gender.

He has such a beautiful song, chirping, and soft whistling and he loves to vocalize, not just in the morning. I had no idea he would be such a pleasant addition to my finch family. And his coloring and tiny white dots are just too adorable. A very cute little finch.

The male stars do have a beautiful song I think. Yours kinda looks like a hen though. Stars are weird like that, sometimes you think you have sexing down by the face mask, but then one that looks female starts singing!

Could be, but the two they had in a store IMO were v. young becuase the other one had hardly any red color on his/her face. I do not know at what age they develop full face/throat coloring.

But as long as mine sings so beautifully, I don't mind having a female.

I googled and found other color mutations of Stars. Goodness, the cinnamon is so pretty too.

He does look like a hen right now, but if he sings, he is definitely a cock. If he is very young, he may not have his full adult plumage yet--it can take as long as six months for them to get all their color, so he may develop a fuller mask. Most of the time, Stars are easy to sex, but every once in a while, you get one that is hard to tell visually. I also love the Stars song, and mine are the quickest to try new foods or investigate anything new in their cages.

My stars are also very open to eating whatever I put in. I think it depends on the species as to which will try new foods easier. Normally, my societies, zebras, and stars will eat most anything. I have a harder time getting all of my waxbills to try new foods...
