Some herbs for birds

Post by CandoAviary » Mon Dec 27, 2010 11:12 pm

Mixed up some herbs for the birds today...this mixture varies. But this was the mix they got today:
Herb Salad CAUTION... I once had a bird get impelled with the sharp edge of one of the dried leaves. I was able to remove it from his cheek ( pierced it from the inside out  ) every since then I grind those big leaves up if I use this product.
Image
Yep..it's sharp alright...ooch!!!

After a light chop in the grinder
Image
To this I add ground kelp
Image
Then add garlic...dried and chrushed
Image
Add bee pollen
Image
And stir
Image
I also serve Australian Blend made by Goldenfeast.... it is the best and most complete suppliment I have found...even includes probiotics
Image
closeup ...contains over 50 ingredients and no artificial perservatives
Image
Also has whole chamomile blossums that the goldbreat love to chrush and eat the tiny seed

served...yep, they approve =D>

If you stick with the packaged herbs you can rest assured they are safe. These conpanies have done the work for you. The herb salad is produced by Twin Beaks Aviary. I buy mine from
Gammy's Finches http://shop.gammysfinches.com/category. ... egoryId=10

The Goldenfeast Austrailian Blend I buy from Beaver Creek Aviary...they have a large selection of seed brands and pelleted diets that I also use....love to get lots of stuff at one place because I save in shipping :D
http://www.foryourbird.com/page/foryourbird/CTGY/gaust

There are many places to buy these products and most times you can pick them up from a vendor at the bird fairs and save the shipping.

I grow some organic herbs and garlic but most of the greens and herbs I grow I offer fresh, not dried. They love chamomile flowers the best :D But every thing shouls be offered in moderation and within an otherwise balanced diet.

Not sure what they have available in Iceland as far as the brands Candace lists but the Herb Salad does tell you what is in it and you might be able to get organic herbs local that might be on the Herb Salad list.

LOVE this post. Candace, your posts are like reading a 'How To' book with a lot of pictures -- the kind I always try to buy! You should put them all together and publish a book on caring for finches CANDACE'S WAY-- I will be the first to buy one! (Please include that stuff you do with the termite posts (or used to) and the seed separator your hubby built and your housings for your birds and the gourds and ALL that!)

I periodically give my birds the dried herb salad -- I give fresh greens daily -- but I must admit I'm not 100% sure what the herb salad is supposed to do... I know the birds are supposed to be able to choose things that help them physically and I'm sure they do -- but, I wish the proof of that was more document(able?) Does anyone feel very confident that it does just that?

No, because people still get sick birds when using the herbs. I don't think the concentration of any one herb is enough to actually combat a real illness but instead gives the birds access to herbs that they normally would never have access too in our normal daily feeding habits. I offer my birds Herb Salad and they consume it but after mixing my own herbs in more concentrated amounts I can clearly see they will eat more of one that is doing something specific.

Here is their explanation of why to use Herb Salad

From the Twin Beaks Aviary:

"Why Do My Birds Need Herb Salad?

Herb Salad is not only for sick birds. It's also beneficial in maintaining the health of the fit bird, in a safe and natural way. The advantages Herb Salad provides the bird receiving medicinal care is in the support it offers sick birds suffering the adverse side effects that medications can produce. It helps stimulate appetite, strengthens the immune system, and encourages good bacteria growth. Sometimes, Herb Salad can even furnish the solution re: the ill bird not responding to treatment when it is due to the fact that the drug(s) being administered is not addressing the problem or is only combating part of it. Enabling your bird's ability to self-medicate can be a life-saver."

HE HE, Anna, thanks but if I ever was organized enough to write an entire book...If I did, would give you a copy just for your vote of confidence

I do not give my bird herb salad all the time.... I think greens of any kind including herbs are really only nutritionally sound when fresh. )or juiced) They may have some medicinal bennefits dried and of course we all know that they make our food taste yummy :D I give them some herb salad maybe once a week to every other week depending on my free time and other feeding routine...like in summer they get fresh pots of stuff and fresh carrot tops, or whatever is growing. It is much easier to feed the greens to flights/aviary birds as opposed to caged breeders.
I believe the idea behind the herb salad is based on the birds in the wild being able to forage and nibble different things as to their bodies needs.... though again, these are fresh, live nutrient rich plants not dried drab green and brown leaves.... that have lost a lot of their value due to the drying process.
Also I feel many people who claim their birds love and devour the salad are missing a cue in their birds behavior... their birds are lacking something. It is just like if you do not furnish a mineral and calcium source for a period of time then the bird is given a dish of oyster shells or eggshells....the bird will fly to it and consume it at a very fast pace... not because they love it but because they are lacking something and the deficiency takes over their normal eating pattern. ...sometimes even to the point of consuming so much that the gizzard becomes impacted which can be life threatening. A bird that has not been exposed to a mineral grit for some time should be limited to the amount that is offer to prevent any overeating health concerns. The same with greens/herbs, dried or fresh...a deficient bird will possibly consume more than is good for them.
My birds will pick and nibble the herb salad but they never consume it wholeheartedly or completely. I think the one gouldian that impelled his cheek with a leaf was actually just playing with the stuff...not actually eating it. I try to offer different foraging items so that the caged birds do not become extremely bored..... herb salad is just one. I also offer dried alfalfa, Blue algea, spirulina, etc. especially in winter when I am not gardening.

I do feed the australian blend every day. I usually mix this into the basic seed mix....

Well there you go, another chapter to my book  ... I know I took pictures of my termite covered stakes...I will have to find them and write a chapter on how I drove my husband crazy while cultivating termites. Me with hammer in one hand driving pine stakes into the ground while he was running around the foundation with a bug sparyer..... Now if that's not compatability

I think the main thing to think about when using or feeding herbs is that you have two groups. Medicinal and Nutritional.

Examples of Medicinal:

Goldenseal

http://www.pollinator.org/Resources/Hyd ... 0sheet.pdf

Wormwood

http://www.essentialbird.com/index.php? ... &Itemid=35

Examples of Nutritional:

Chickweed
Dandelion

http://www.americansingercanary.com/chickweed.htm

Of course all of the above have both medicinal and nutritional values but this gives a general idea of the individuality of each herb we are able to use in conjunction with their normal diets.

Also the whole purpose of having the herbs there if they need them is to have them available at all times. You will find that sometimes they consume most everything and there other times when they just use it as confetti…

Candace, I can understand wanting to chop up the herbs so your birds don't hurt themselves, but I thought that wasn't recommended since your birds can't tell what herbs they are eating if they are too small. Some of the leaves in that mix are HUGE, and I can't see how they would able to take a nibble out of it, so do you think that's even true?
