Hilary-Thanks for the info about the Strawberry Yahoo group. I've just requested to join. If nothing else I should be able to get some good advice out of them.
I've contacted a bunch of aviaries and importers now who used to have strawberries, and it seems that the Avian Bird flu has made it really hard to get these cuties. It's too bad I can't find anyone who is trying to breed them--it would make it all so much simpler.

I've noticed lately that several species of finches, including the Strawberries, are getting harder to find. I have been trying to find a mate for my male and cant seem to find one. His mate died a couple years ago. He has the prettiest song, but he is as bald as a buzzard, lost all his feathers from his head down to his shoulders and they never grey back. He is still one of my favorites.
Finches are like potatoe chips. You can't have just one.

Not really. My hen did become routinely egg bound and eventually died from that. But she was also old.ryanf wrote:they are beautiful. are they a difficult species to keep?
I have seen them in my local Petco on and off for the past three years. Though before Petco opened for business, I never saw S'berries in the privately owned pet shops near me.

Strawberry Availability and outdoor housing
I too have been struggling to find a mate for my female strawberry (in Los Angeles area). I've heard they aren't importing due to an avian flu embargo. I sure wish the local breeders would get busy so they remain available. As mentioned before, they are delightful singers and have a sweet disposition. Any suggestions?
BTW, anybody know the outdoor temperature minimums? I'm a little worried as winter comes and can't find any info. Appreciate the help.

I've got a single male strawberry here in CO. There is a shop in town that has 2 pair but they are retailing at $398 a pair and only sold in pairs. I do get to LA every now and then. If I find myself driving in the next couple months I'll let you know. Seems a shame to keep him without a mate.

Awesome! Wouldn't it be nice if we could match the remaining singles in order to save their availability for other enthusiasts! I rescued her from Petco. Every time I went in for food I would see her. She would just peep and fly nervously within in this huge cage...all by herself. My daughter, not prone to tirades, but with total empathy, would not let me leave the store until we brought her home.
She's a wonderful bird, such a beautiful song.
I just can't imagine why the breeders haven't picked up on the tight demand...The guy that wants $398 sure has!
thanks for keeping me mind...

You know, almost all finches, even those at petsmart/petco are shipped in some way or another. So... shipping on airlines confuses me when people won't do it because almost every finch is shipped from somewhere. Except those that are locally bred and locally purchased, but even those still have to get in a travel cage and travel to their new home
