@Can
That is interesting to know about the plastic trays.
I just put the newspaper in the trays.
I do use the compress sawdust in some of my cages, and that helps with absorbing some of the urine.

Mostly, what it is, is that the plastic tray start to wear over time and the smooth surface of the plastic gets matted and scratched. It is the rough texture of the plastic (that has started to brake down) that discolours and collects odours. You see it a lot in old animal stuff - cages, litter boxes, etc. I just figure I spent so much on my cages, if the bottom tray goes, I'm at a loss to find another one.

I also may just not trust plastic, nor like the look of aging plastic. For that reason, all the dishes in my bird cages are ceramic or stainless steel.

I use to arrange cat's litter (kind odorless) on tray bottom, this because absorbs and keep dejections tied and dry, and reduce malodorousness.
Using the newspapers have a history of unexplained deaths, then I realized that due to intoxication.

For more information of how i keep my cages take a look here:

Is there anything safe that I can pour on the bottom so it can go around the contours of the cage bottom? I saw something at Petco and the bag said that the birds shouldn't have access to it. My birds peck at the bottom so I was afraid to buy that. Then the guy working there told me to use newspaper and that's what he uses for his parrot. I thought that the ink would be bad so I won't use newspaper. I've been cutting sheets to fit, but it's a pain. any suggestions?
What country are you in?
In the UK and Europe we have various products, one I like to use is Easybed or goldchip which is a bit better but costs more but both are ideal if you suffer from Asama as they are dust free, have a nosy at the link.
