Re: What kind of nest for owls?
Some of my Owls use hooded wicker nests, one pair is set up right now with a wooden nestbox inside their cage, and I have one pair that will use the plastic nestbox hung on the outside of their cage. My camera battery is dead right now, so I'll try to get photos tomorrow.
As far as banding, I don't do nest checks with my Owls, so I band them on the day they fledge with closed bands, using one size larger than the recommended size. The National Finch & Softbill Society, which issues closed numbered bands in the U.S., approves this procedure.

Re: What kind of nest for owls?
Sorry, I misplaced my charger for my camera battery. When I took the first photos, they were huge, had to reset the camera, then took some more. Sorry the photo of the wooden box is out of focus, will try for a better one tomorrow.
I wish all my birds would tolerate the plastic nestbox on the outside of the cage--it is so easy to check. Of course, most of my birds don't tolerate nest checks, so I guess it doesn't matter. This Owl pair are very tolerant. I looked today, and there are six eggs in the nest. The parents are fawn Owl hen and normal Owl male.

I do, too. These Owls are so good about letting me take photos. Usually, when I take a photo of this hen in the nest, the male will get on top of the nest, just as if he is keeping an eye on me. This is one of my fawn hens, and her mate is split/fawn, so I should get some more fawn babies out of them.annague wrote:I love that last picture -- so cute!

Well they are adorable! There is something about their little owl faces that is so endearing. I am just getting to know their fiesty personalities and love their interesting calls and sounds.
I also think owls are wonderful 'foil' birds -- they are so nice with more colorful birds because they give your eye something to rest on and provide a visual contrast that has its own appeal.
