I don't think that feathers are in any way connected to air sac mites.Or I've never noticed it!

What are Air sack mites, do they cause little white bumbs under the skin?

A mate of mine also has a Java and recently it has been very irritated so I took a look at it and found some sever discolouration of its skin and it was covered in white bumbs, especially around the shoulders, it stopped taking baths because this seemed to irritate it more, now it is going crazy and the local vet has moved so we are having trouble finding another vet to take a look at it. I have kept my bird away from it just in case.

Cheers

from reading your description of dry bumps on the skin......we may have a similar problem. My finch died last month. he had a large growth under his wing, feather loss and dry bumpy skin..... I also noticed clicking sounds from his mouth so he also had air sac mites(never knew that until afterwards) currently i have another finch who is experiencing the same problem dry bumpy skin and clicking noise it may possibly be due to air sac mites...I have an appointment with a veternarian on tuesday so i will update you then. you can check out a picture of my deceased bird chester in the Gallery under Health problems.

Sounds like mites. Scaly face mites will cause feather loss, and air sac mites could due to stress.

You'll want to try treating them right away. You should see improvement with in a few days unless they are really bad. In that case it may be longer.

You should also treat with an antibiotic after treatment for mites to help the bird fight off infection the mites can cause when they die off and are left in the skin or lungs.
