4 Little Owls
Today is the Orlando Show..the finch vendors were plenty but the varity was down compared to the other shows. Shaftails were few, could not find RCCB's, fawn zebras were not available.
My husband found 4 little owl finches, 2 perfect little pairs. Unrelated and one of the females dropped an egg. They are young and not flighty.
So now I have 4 pairs!!! I am setting the new ones up in a separate small cage for now to quarantine and to see if they will breed.
I am a happy girl!!!!

Re: 4 Little Owls
Congrats on getting the Owls! They are such a wonderful little bird, I just love them. Now that you have four pairs, you will be able to put together unrelated pairs from their babies. No Cherries, huh?

This is a picture of them on the way home...they are in a small quarantine cage with lots of seed, pellets, Herb Salad which they are loving and millet. I put two nest boxes in the little cage, the breeder (private individual) said that one of the females dropped an egg this morning.

Re: 4 Little Owls
The two pairs are settling in nicely...I am going to take one of the 5 ft long 3 feet high flights, divide it down the middle and give each pair their own large cage. The are settling in and love boiled egg. I can get right next to the cages and they don't fly away, these have to be some of the calmest owls...atleast compares to my other two pairs!

Re: 4 Little Owls
Congrats! Owls have become some of my favorite species. They are such characters. I hope you have success with these new pairs. When my owls laid fertile eggs I considered it my favorite moment of finching.

Re: 4 Little Owls
Congrats. They are lovely. Hoping you get lots of unrelated babies to pair up in future.
I must admit that not one of my owls (9) are flightly, but then I suppose I am comparing them to many of the waxbills that are skittish. Most of my Owls were aviary bred and don't mind me coming up rather close to take pics etc. I actually think some deliberately pose!
Domenic I fully understand your joy and "moment" when finding fertile Owl eggs. I've waited for a year now and Finally one pair had fertile eggs. They will be going to the seperate aviary for future breeding.

Re: 4 Little Owls
Janine, I love these little guys! Hope you can get a good colony going, they are in big demand here! I spoke with the breeder and I got the only 2 pairs avaiable, he said people were asking him for more all throughout the day!
They have the cutest personalities and I think are more comical than my zebras. One of my older pairs in the flight are very busy building AGAIN and the male has been pursuing her. Hopefully they all stop playing at playing house and get busy and produce!!!
Both new hens slept in their nests last night...at least I know they know where to go!!!!!

Re: 4 Little Owls
Deborah..I took one of my flights and ran a divider down the center. Each pair now has a flight to themselves, one pair has been in the nest...a lot. I am hoping to get some new little ones soon. I think I want to concentrate on the owls so I am going to get out of some of the zebra mutations I was starting to work with. The man I got these from has many and said he can hold new, young pairs for me and meet me at the shows. I am slowly working on a colony.

That is great, Cindy. I think they are just lovely little birds -- beautiful too -- love those attractive white masks and such characters-- keep us informed!
