I've been doing some research on cutthroats but I still have some questions about the general species. Most of my questions are about the "market" and how and why.
For a long time I watched the cutthroats at my local Petsmart but they were just a bit too expensive. They wanted $70+ for a single finch. The cutthroats were just recently reduced to $39.99. When I tried to find an answer online about why, the only thing I came up with was the CITIES act, where they are now being monitored as endangered flora and fauna over in Africa and their species was being watched with imports and whatnot.
It said that they weren't actually endangered, the government just wanted to monitor their exports a little better or something.
Can someone clear this up for me? Why would their prices drop in price because of the restrictions in trade? Is it even related between the drop in price or was Petsmart just being over-priced as usual? Thats kind of a big price drop in the birds, and they weren't even on sale. Their prices just randomly changed one day.

Re: Talk to me about cutthroats
There is a female cutthroat at the PetSmart near me, and I noticed the price drop as well. I don't know about your store, but I think the price dropped because the bird has been there for a year or so. It is housed with green singing finches, and PetSmart lowered the price on them as well, because they have been there for years.

Re: Talk to me about cutthroats
I don't think I've ever seen a female cutthroat at my Petsmart...they're just not "flashy" enough, I guess. I guess that does make sense about how they've been there for a while. I checked on the Petsmart website and the cutthroats are still listed as $70+, though the store is selling them for $39 without a sale sign.
It was just sort of odd. I think I noticed a price cut on the green singing finch as well...the 2 cutthroats were housed with the only one there. I was never really interested in the green singing finch though so I never checked the price!

I do believe all the Petsmarts are independantly owned.
It's up to the owners if they see birds are not selling.
I went to one the other day near my house and they have cut throuts and green singers also.
If you are there at the right time you can get a deal.
They will put them on sale for a weekend or a few days more and then put back the old price.

Re: Talk to me about cutthroats
Thanks, Bear. That actually clears a lot up for me. I was wondering about the general price of the cutthroats and why and when. I'm finding that the general price for breeders here around $40 and I wasn't sure whether the breed itself had taken a plummet in sales all over (and why?) or if it was just Petsmart marking them down at a reasonable rate finally.
I'm heading to a bird fair this weekend so I plan on doing some bird shopping there anyways. Thanks

The Green Singers are great little birds and easy breeders. the males sing just like canaries and are just as load!

Re: Talk to me about cutthroats
haha, they sound fancy! I might look into them in the future. I haven't seen them outside of Petsmart and Petsmart makes it so you can't hear them. I'll be able to see them better at the bird fair this next weekend though.
