Interesting pictures. It will be fun to see what your birds do, Candace -- very intriguing. :)

Huh, speaking of Sergio....when I bought these birds from him he told me he was getting out of the gouldians. But, I just added my birds to the NFSS census and noticed that he has registered some that he is breeding too......so you may see some more of the orange backed coming from him.

Added later: Oh My Gosh, I'm so sorry, I just went back and checked and the "Sergio" listed on the NFSS census is a different Sergio! I'm so embarrassed! Well, the last name IS almost the same too......that's my excuse! (besides the fact that I must be losing my mind!)

Interesting... I was in contact with Daily (partner?) recently and said they didn't breed any more. Do you have a direct way to contact sergio other than through the parrot site? Now I am really curious and hopeful :D PLEASE PM me with any contact information...thanks.

I started to work on my census for this past year but quickly got overwhelmed trying to seperate the mutations and count the numbers.... too many #-o And I can't go by my breeding records because many have been sold and are not here anymore and can't be added to the census.... maybe I will figure out an easier system. I have over 300 goulds at present, many youngsters :?

Candace! 300! Wow, I can't imagine - it must be Heaven in your house! Well, good luck with that census than. I only have 22 so it was quite easy for me....didn't take long at all! How long have you been keeping finches? I've probably been doing this off and on since I was 18 but only started buying more Gouldians last January. Here - isn't this picture cute??? My brother, Jim, raises pigeons - he has been a judge in some of the shows but usually only enters his birds to be shown. Can you tell by the look on his face that the bird I'm holding is his?

What a great old photo! Yes indeed, your brother is one proud owner of that pigeon  I had a neighbor when growing up that use to fly and race his pigeons...fascinating birds!
I have kept birds all my life as pets, worked pet stores, got serious about breeding finches and canaries about 12 years ago. The gouldians just within the last 4 years that I have dedicated my time and space for that species. In 2001 I had 1 pair of normal red heads that bred in 2003, they had 4 youngsters...4 male and 1 hen. They were pets only. Then I closed my pet business and married. I decided in 2008 to breed the 4 males, they were 5 years old. I bought 2 BH hens and 2 RH hens and paired them. I then also bought a pair of OH yellows. That year I had 38 chicks..... I kept most and paired them, some with the yellow babies to get my first dilutes. I bought a few new cocks and carried on.... turned out that I had some /blue in the bunch as all of a sudden I had blues in the nest.... 2009 I had over 100 chicks.
I retained many of that years offsprings and added many blues and silvers, new lilacs and yellows from another breeder that was retirering. I think it was like 27 goulds. This past year I had several hundred chicks. I am now able to see the lines that I have created..... you just can't tell for a while...not until they grow up and breed for themselves what you have  I do sell at bird fairs but really am fortunate to be able to keep many until they are fully matured. I have a house dedicated to them, The Crazy Birdhouse :D

These oddball spotties and blueheads are some I will definately be holding onto and experimenting with. Hopefully the red lines and orange backs too. I will also always continue to breed a pure normal line.(because they are beautiful and because you need strong outcrosses when working with new mutations) I not sure about breeding all the other mutations..... just needed to spend some time with all the mutations to see which ones I fancied. It's the oddballs

Oh boy....That is an amazing story and the Crazy Birdhouse is definately a place I'd love to visit. You're husband is a rare jewel isn't he??? Better than diamonds! I just love the place where you set and take notes or maybe have a coffee or tea. Aw, heck, I love everything!

Teresa, that is a wonderful photo!

Candace, be sure to keep us informed on the unusual colorations in your lines -- I'm with you -- go with what is interesting to you -- !! (Otherwise, why get into finches in the first place?)

Anna,
I have always followed my heart's passions and when it comes to finches it's no different. I always say if you follow your heart and what makes you smile then everyday is full of joy. I do enjoy my finches...especially the oddballs. I'll keep you posted :D
