One eye closed

Post by Geordie » Fri Nov 02, 2007 4:02 am

Hello Guys,

The 2 new Javas I got at the beginning of the week never seem to stop eating and are extremely healthy, but the fawn keeps it's left eye closed most of the time. It will open it sometimes for a look around then shuts it again then maybe half open it a bit before shutting again.

The other Java has both eyes open all the time when awake.

Has anyone seen this before?

Apologies if this has been covered in a previous thread but I haven't found any topics on it.

Cheers

hi geaordie
have you looked at the bird close enough to amke sure that it does not have anything in there,as finches are very good at hiding things until the symptoms get really bad it amy have something in there like a speck of sand or grit you may try bathing the eye with a saline solution if you think it has a foreign object in there

I tried, it doesn't mind coming to me on its own and will even let me hold it without squirming but when I try to get the eye open it keeps it firmly closed, I am going to have to try and catch it unaware. It could be grit like you say as it does enjoy a grit bath after a water bath, there doesn't seem to be any inflammation to it which I would expect if the grit has been in there for a number of days. I am just worried that it is going to affect its depth perception as it will sometimes miss its intended perch while in flight, can be quite comical actually.

Anyway it had the eye open this morning but it closes it again on and off. I am wondering if the lighting has anything to do with it, maybe the lights are too strong and the position of the cage and their preferred perch puts their left side into the light.

Cheers for your help.

This is getting worrying now, the bird that kept closing its eye is now closing both of them, it seems to be uncomfortable with them open and now the other new bird has started to close its left eye too. The vet isn't open for another 24hours and I don't know what to do, can someone help. I tried the saline thing but no improvement.

Thanks Ken, loads to ingest there, I will try my best. I would hate to lose the birds after one week, I love them so much already.

I talked to a friend and he suggested because of their age (just over 2 months) that they might be feeling the cold a bit and that I should take away the treats such as cabbage, lettuce etc. and keep them only on the baby food for another couple of months. So I have done all that and increased the temperature a bit inside their covered cage (gave it a thorough cleaning first) and now the 2 of them are like zombies. The silverback was very active before all of this and now wont leave its perch and no improvement in the fawn and hasn't eaten anything for hours now.

I am sick with worry right now and can't understand why vets don't have an emergency service here so anger is mixed into my feelings right now.

Anyway, cheers for any and all help.

hi geordie
i am really sorry that i,or any other member cannot come up with the answer...i have bee wracing my brains to see if i can remeber anthiny remotely like those symptoms but i just cant think of anything....as it iis mentioned on the link i left there is a section on teflon based items and air con systems those are the only things i can think of that may be affecting thier health..you could ring the place you got them from and make sure they are on the correct seed mixture,or you could get hold of a small amount of paddy rice to see if you can tempt them to eat more than they are already doing.....please let us know if there is any change in their circumstances and in the meantime i will continue to search the net for any answers good luck!
