Building a Flight Cage

Post by flrancho » Sun Jan 30, 2011 2:05 pm

I'm considering going the route of a homemade flight cage for my finches in order to give them more space to fly. I've already seen the link from the Finch Info Center on building a flight cage, but was wondering if there were any other reputable places I may be able to find hints/tips or "how tos" in addition to maybe blueprints or something. Maybe you can supply your own personal tips. Any more info would be helpful.

Here's a link to how I made my small flight cage. Rough plans are on there too. And a some of the thought processes I went through when building it.

I'm very happy with it except for one thing. I should have figured out a way to have a divider slide in the middle, and had 2 trays on the bottom. It would have really helped when cage cleaning.

Here's an article and slideshow on my blog about the cage I built. I didn't have any plans, but I did have an idea of what I wanted and how I wanted to make it.

It’s 4 ft wide, 3 ft high, and 2.5 ft deep.

I'm wanting to build a minimum of 6 feet long and 2 feet wide. Haven't decided really on height.

Does anyone have any ideas for the wiring that is not galvanized steel or hardware cloth? I've heard you have to soak these in vinegar, scrub them and rinse them, and my family that will be helping me doesn't want to go through this process. :(

I don't think washing it is absolutely necessary - finches don't chew on the wire like hookbills. You can also buy wire hardware cloth that is plastic coated. Or you could use plastic hardware cloth if it's going to be indoors.
