Beautiful gems or Am I in for a surprise!

Post by GotFinch! » Tue Feb 01, 2011 2:25 am

Hi, everyone. I just got back from central Cali after visiting families and in-laws. While there the wife and i decided to stop by the San Jose Bird Mart and pick up a few birds we don't often see in Las Vegas area. We bought a pair Lavender waxbills- having to wait too long to adopt some babies from my brother's pair- :x , a male star finch, and a pair of-what turned out to be-Abyssinian crimson wings. Am i in over my head with the last pair? My wife really love their simple color- red and olive. That's what got us into this finch mess in the beginning-buying what we love, not necessary whats easy to breed or what's popular out there. The seller said they are close cousins to the twinspots and should eat the same food, other than that not much else. #-o Hope someone can chime in cause there's not much out in google-land either!

Really beautiful birds!! Good luck with breeding them -- let us know what happens.

@psilocybin6, thank you for your wealth of information! 8) The website looks nice. Do you know if I can keep them with other African finches like red cheeks, lavenders, and green twinspots?

Liz, I would have gotten either cw species, but there were no red faced cws at the show. There were crimson seedcrackers- but they looked intimidating and out of my range. I never knew all these birds were even existed and that there is a conservation watch for the Shelley's until now. Likewise, this forum rocks! You guys rock! :D

Living in Vegas I am sure the bottom of his aviary is as dry as can be. Ken did you attend the Henderson bird fair in October? I have an entire thread dedicated to what I saw there, what an amazing selection. I can see you and your wife appreciate the rare species!

Yes, I did Domenic. I loved the varieties but didn't know this forum yet so afraid to try any rare species until further reading. It was our first outing to a show and we bought the green twinspots and green singers. Also it was an impulse thing!  We've just finished the aviary and felt it need some filling. I got most of my Africans and Gouldians from the flea market and fantastik indoor swapmeet. At this point everything is for pure enjoyment. Someday, i might decide to build a separate enclosure for breeding. :)
