RCCB Female?????? a sad turn of events ):

Post by cindy » Thu Feb 10, 2011 8:36 am

Morning all!!! I found this lovely little one and was told it was a female RCCB female. It looks almost identical to my female I lost not to long ago. It is very energetic and sings and chirps alot!!!! It is quarantined and almost ready to ho int o the cage with my male RCCB....just want to be sure.

The brown on the head goes all the way to top of the beak and there is black on the beak...it looks identical to my male except for the red cheeks.

If this is a blue cap female I guess come time for a nearby show I will need to get a female RCCB and a male BCCB!!!

I read Sally's description and it may match a RCCB female...just need another set or two or three of eyes to confirm.

Liz..thank you so much. You know how you get something and then rethink it to much!!!! That is me.

I am amazed at how peppy she is and she sings to, not drawn out like the male but just a happy girl. My other female was so quiet and sat most of the time.

The male I have is Mr. "bounce off the wall, songster" The two should be a good match!

PS...your lady is a beauty!

Hmmm... her beak looks a little pink (fuschia) for a female RCCB...to me... (at least in the pictures)...

I have both species and while it's easy to tell them apart when they are together its harder when you just have one.

Is her beak more of a tan color or more a bright fuschia? I am attaching pictures of both BCCB's and RCCB's and you can look and decide for yourself what your little hen is. The RCCB's have quite a bit of darker color at the tip of their beaks normally (brown/black).

Also, most all my RCCB females weigh 11 gms or under while my BCCB females normally weigh at least 12 gms (so if you have a scale that might help if she is of normal weight).

Either way -- she is LOVELY! I love all my cordons -- full of beauty, character, and song and dance! Congratulations!!

As Anna said, it is often hard to tell on CB hens when you don't have both RC and BC to compare side-by-side. Plus, unlike some species where every hen will look alike, CBs will vary in the amount and extent of blue from one hen to another, or from one male to another. And it is hard to tell from photos--your hen looks different in some photos from others.

I would say that she is RCCB, going by her overall appearance. Here are two hens of mine, first RCCB and second BCCB. It is hard for me to get good photos of my CBs, they are definitely camera-shy, but I think you can see the differences in these photos.

One thing that I have noticed only with RCCB hens, and not with any of my BCCB hens--though the BCCB hens get very flighty and may scold me a little when they have eggs/babies in the nest, my RCCB hens flat-out chew me out! They have a very loud, shrill, staccato call that is telling me to back off right now. They do this with either eggs or babies in the nest. Now, I haven't had a large number of RCCB hens to say that they all do this, but so far, every one that I have had will.

You know I am computer illiterate, and the same applies to my camera skills  , but my camera image mode is set to PC screen (1024), and so when I upload a picture, you can click on it and it will enlarge to fill the screen, making it very easy to see detail.

Anna and Sally her beak is more fuschia with black lines and a tip, the head is all brown...she sings like my male.Anna fron the picture with your RCCB pair she looks exactly like this, Sally from the side of yours she is the same.

Sally I literally took your description from another post with me on my cell phone, pulled it up and did a check on her before getting her. It was handy to have that description...I really hate second guessing myself. There is definately black on her beak though.

Very exciting, Cindy!! You'll have to let us know how the happy couple is doing when you put them together.

Sally -- so funny you said that about the RCCB's scolding. Mine are the same way, in fact, I call one of my pairs "Scold" and "Fuss". They are smaller than the BCCB's but if together (and I've had both RCCB's and BCCB pairs breed in the same largish cage together) the RCCB's rule the roost. (It must be the red!) But then they feed each other's babies, too.

Their greetings to one another when they have been apart is one of the highlights of my day usually. One of my RCCB males was highly upset when I separated him from his "baby girl" for a rest. He got out (I still don't know how) of my aviary cage and got IN (I still don't know how) :-k to HER cage and they are together still.

Fun, fun birds! Keep us informed!
