It seems the males can stay without color for a very long time as Donna's did so not always a sure way to sex them.

All my males that Sally took all had the most gorgeous red but then when Donna saw them she was like what the - why is my male so plain looking.

Judy what do yours sound like when singing?

My male is now molting into red colors. I think adding the other two males made him get down to business......

He has one long, high note, 3 middle notes, 3 lower notes, then one long very low note.

My other male's song is a varied trilling with two high 'beeps' at the end.

I am going to post some pics of all 3 of them. Just have patience with me, I'm still in the learning stages of this camera... :? :)

It was nice to see you also, Liz. No, I don't buy a lot (birds) from Mark, but I was looking for a male chinese painted quail...which I did get. I now have a silver female, normal female and normal/red breasted male which I picked up at Mark's. I also bought two diamond doves. Oh, they are so lovely. I think all (quail and doves) will enjoy being outside this summer with the finches.

Good luck with your new strawberries! They are darling little birds :D
Home to the menagerie... Gouldians, Societies, Parrot finches, Gold breasted waxbills, Lavenders, Stars...one big happy family!

I agree the Buttons and Doves will quite enjoy your outdoor aviary this summer! I also have a normal Button hen along with the silver hen from Jeremy and a male CP Button too! Congrats on your new birds and thank you too!

Thanks Fardad - yes these are Vince's. He said 4 hens (2008 - 2010) were passed over to Mark but I only saw the two (2009-2010) that I bought.

Mark also had a male Strawberry and had it marked on his website for $125 but he wouldn't sell it to me for that price - he suddenly wanted more. So I left it.

Well, needless to say, today the little stinker sang his butt off! I cannot believe it! I think I see some faint reddish feathers coming in on his breast, too. I just needed to wait a bit til the little fella grew up.. :) :) NOW I can hope he'll be Daddy soon.

So, Judy, is that my little stinker that just sang his butt off? Or is it your other little male? Either way, let's hope that the hen is in the mood.

Sally... yes, it's your stinker.. He is certainly biding his time. I hope she's in the mood, too. He was singing, singing, singing and she was on the same perch looking up at him like she was bewildered how he was belting out that song, too. The Owls are sitting tight.. hoping to hear peeps anyday now. Also have Shaftails, Canarys, Firefinches, and Lady Gouldians on eggs. I checked and all the eggs are fertile. The Societys had one huge LG chick they hatched and a teeny Society chick. They look like Mutt n Jeff. The LG chick looks very light, so I'm hoping it's a Silver. It will definately be (at least) Yellow/blue male. Exciting days .. pics soon, I promise. :)

Nice to hear you have so many on eggs, Judy. Are your Fires able to parent rear their chicks? Mine aren't.

That is terrific that you have so many on eggs, Judy! You'll have to get that camera mastered--we will want pictures! One of my biggest problems with the Strawberries is getting them synched so that a pair is in breeding mode at the same time. I'll keep my fingers crossed that your hen will be in breeding mode too!

Yes, Liz, parent raised and no live food. This is thier 3rd clutch and their first clutch this year. I attribute it all to Doug Taylor's Green Day Diet/eggfood and freeze-dried bloodworms.

Donna, I order them from THATPETPLACE.COM They used to be about $10.99 for the 1.76oz size, now they are listed at $15.99, but when you go to check out.. they still post at the $10.99 price. (?) Whatever the cost, they are still worth it to me. In the local PetSmart they are about $10 for the tiny size can .42 oz. While I'm ordering, I also get Spirulina, Mysis shrimp, Daphnia, small Krill, and Ocean plankton. When you enter the site, click on FISH FOOD, then click on FREEZE DRIED. The FDBW come in a large can, about the size of canned vegetables. I give them to all my birds. Good luck. :-)
