My goldfinches

Post by haworthia » Sun Feb 13, 2011 9:52 pm

I'm a finch fancier in Shanghai. Here are my favourite goldfinches.

One is a Siberian Goldfinch (C.c major), and the other is a Grey-headed Goldfinch (C.c paropanisi). Both of them were wild birds collected in far northwest area of China which located in central Asia.

Beautiful birds.
How long did it take for them to settle down since they
were wild cought?
I find it's usually about a year till they are really calm.

Wow thats a bird in pristine condition =P~ .Has it molted it's feathers since you have had him?If it has you have done an incredible job in retaining it's true colours.

Hi Jerry!

I purchased them at end of Nov. And they should be fresh caught, maybe 2 weeks ago. They are less nervous at present.

The grey-headed is a resident bird in far northwest China while the Siberian is a winter migrant which breed in Western Siberia, Russia, and only migrates to China in fall.

IMO, the time of settling down depends on individual. I trend to choose young birds with first-year molt which are much easier to be calm. Also in China, we have some little skills to make wild birds be docile in a short time.

In my experience, the Goldfinch is easy to be calm among eurasian species, same as the eurasian siskin. ^_^^_^

Hi, my friend.
Yes, they are fresh caught ones.
It's a big problem to keep their true colors. I feeds them wz green vegetables and cooked carrot which believed would be benefit the colors. But I'm sure their colors will be duller after a molt in late summer.
