Diatomaceous Earth and its use

Post by cooleydd » Sat Nov 17, 2007 3:03 pm

I have been doing some research on the use of Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth (DE) in and around the house and on pets. Can't find much on using it on our birds but from the Forum there has been a lot of discussion and a number who use it. I also know that it is used a lot on chickens. I have used it for chickens in the past and will now start using it for my birds.

I thought as I was doing my research someone else may like to see what I read. So I made a list of what I thought was pretty good. However I do not recommend any one paper or who to buy from. I have noticed that the range in prices of DE is very wide. Sometimes you can buy 10 lbs. worth in one place cheaper than you can buy 1 lb. at another. However shipping i high so you have to take shipping into consideration.

If you have a large farm supply house, poultry sale company and maybe large pet suppliers you may be able to buy it there (and save shipping but pay for the gas).

Note that some of the URL's are very long and where they were I gave an - OR - and a TinyURL which will allow you to access it without fighting the long URL - I hope they all work for you - they did for me.

None of this is in the way of a recommendation - just providing information.

Excellent resources - thank you! I just started DE myself. My friend Elvira wanted it more for control of internal parasites and talked me into also getting some. I'm more interested in whether it can control my seed moth population, which currently LOVES my seed hoppers and dishes. So far, so good!

Hilary

If you will make a report of how you are using it and in what quantities and what results - It would be a great help to us all. Then others add their experience maybe the whole thing can be permanently kept to refer to.

I add 1/2 cup to 75lbs of seeds. I was told to use a handful to 50lb bag. I didn't want to guess and I didn't want to use to much so I made up my own amount.

I noticed when I add DE to a new batch of seeds I don't get any Seed Moths but when I get lazy and don't add the DE they are back.......So from now on I will be using it.
Happy Birding......<><
