Re: mixed small aviary?
well, I was thinking about having just males. A pair of male owl finch, a pair of blue caps, a pair of star finch... and so on, but no females as I don't want any fights.
I know that gouldian males live happy together as long as there is no female around, so I guess it will be the same with owls, star finches and blue caps. If I'm wrong, please let me know before I start buying finches!!
And a quick question... if all owls, blue caps and star finches are males, would it be a problem if I put gouldian hens?

Re: mixed small aviary?
I don't see how it would be a problem.
Something else to think about Colorin, I have RCCB's and BCCB's and they do great together in a single sex environment -- However, when I put the males all together and they are resting they still have periods of time (at least mine do) where they will get fussy with one another and do some dominance chasing. (It could be because they want to breed and their females are in the same room although not the same cage). It doesn't bother me and they have never hurt each other but just something for you to be aware of.
Can't wait to see your new birds! I think you will love CB's, too. Such exquisite birds!

I can't wait to see it finished
Great job so far and the species you are thinking about are going to be a perfect fit.

Re: mixed small aviary?
well, one more step closer to having my new birds...
I have done some painting and wall-decoration. I have sponge-painted the walls inside the aviary in two shades of green, and have added some olive-tree branches using a wall stencil.

detail of the painted branches:

I've also added some plants and two spotlights. One at each end of the aviary.
And have done a home-made multi-branch perch:

Some more details are needed, like the feeding dishes and the floor covering, but I hope the birds will enjoy their "suite".
I have already contacted a Blue capped breeder that has males available!

Very nicely done! I like the sponging and stenciling, the branches too. The spotlighting should look terrific - will you have them on timers?

Very nice!!!
Just curious: Will you keep the blinds in there or take it out? It will look dirty soon if you keep it in there...

Re: mixed small aviary?
they would be dirty in no time
Yes, I'm taking them off, and the holes in the wall left by the blinds I will fill with silk branches
The spotlight won't be on timers. They have plenty of light and where I live it hardly rains, so 90% of days are sunny. But I can switch them on and off from the outside

Re: mixed small aviary?
I'm almost there!!
Night shots as promised. With a few artifical plants added, and a couple of "pretty" nests that I was given some time ago.
I have also pluged-in one of those tiny lights that you buy for children so they are not scared of darkness. It is a 1W led with a sensor, so it will automatically switch on at night and off in the morning.

They have brand new feeding dishes. Tray and all:

Colorin, it looks so nice, if I were a bird I would definitely be knocking on your front door!
Great job and don't forget to take pictures of the birds when you get them!

Re: mixed small aviary?
well, that window on the left (the one inside the aviary) faces my flatroof, so I'm planning on building a 4-5 m2 "structure" outside, maybe using bird netting, where the birds will have plenty of flying space and will have access to it through that window in the warmer months (May to November). the window will remain closed in the coldest winter months, and they will get the sun and fresh air from the other window that faces East.

What a nice set up. This is my dream that, probably, will never come true, but it is nice to know that some people can have the set up like this.

Re: mixed small aviary?
tomorrow I'll get a pair of Blue capped Cordon Bleu cocks. A 200 miles drive to meet the breeder and bring them home! He also breeds owl finches so I might be back with two owls too
Hope they are nice birds (it's not easy to find blue caps around here) and I hope they are healthy and don't take too long to "adjust" to their new home and leave the stress behind...
I must confess I've never seen a blue cap other than in pictures! so I'll appreciate any advice you could offer before I buy them. Besides the "normal" checkings on any bird, are there any "flaws" that are specific to Blue caps?
