Re: CUBAN MELODIOUS FINCHES
i breed mine in 2 sizes of cages....
either 36 longx 18 tall x 12 deep
or 24 longx 24 tall x 12 deep
i put fake leaves from a ficus tree and/or ivy inside the cage to make it hommy for them!
i use the outside mount canary nest (will attach pic) with the door removed hanging inside the cage...
normaly i fill it with hay and then give them coco fiber to weave with....
they get a nice finch mix...
and then EGGFOOD daily.... i use my own version of the green day diet...
i have never had to use LIVE with the cubans...
as far as the pairing goes... i normally pair them young... and have ZERO aggression problems
when i have to pair older birds... i normally do it when i can keep an eye on them... and have NO NEST OR MATERIAL available until im sure they are getting along good!
if i see excessive chasing and plucking then i will seperate and try again later...
i have had HENS that are just as mean if not meaner than males before... so watch both!!!
last year i had 3 pairs working.... this year i have 7....
hope this helps a little at least!~

Re: CUBAN MELODIOUS FINCHES

Chase, curious question: how did you lose them with wicker? Did they get their toes stuck or something? (Just trying to learn).

Re: CUBAN MELODIOUS FINCHES
toenails! and WHOLE LEGS!
had a one legged male for a while! it was so sad.... but he still bred!
i try to get ALL of the birds to use something besides the wicker!
so far the nest-basket cage has worked VERY WELL!!!!!!!
i will post pics of it sometime soon as well!
but since the cubans like to build a cup shaped nest... the canary cage works wonders!!!!!

Re: CUBAN MELODIOUS FINCHES
Would LOVE to see those pictures -- sounds like you are very creative at fitting the right nest to the right bird.
That's something I haven't really thought about until now.
I found a lady sort of close by that has a clutch of related Cuban babies she is selling for $80 each. From what I have read that is a great price... right?
I was thinking to purchase the male from her and look for a female for him. Or do you think I should purchase a hen and look for a male?

Start with a male and then look for a hen.
Some people just keep males for singing like they would canaries.

Re: CUBAN MELODIOUS FINCHES
last year i raised ALL HENS and one male...
looks like i have a lot of boys this year....
so to answer your question.....
i would buy all of them lol
or at least a pair... then trade off the one you found a replacement for!
that would be your best bet!!!

Re: CUBAN MELODIOUS FINCHES
That's a good suggestion, Chase!
I should have thought of that.
I've seen pictures and she seems knowledgeable so I guess i'll proceed cautiously and see what happens.
Sorry to hijack this thread! Please forgive.

Re: CUBAN MELODIOUS FINCHES
I'd LOVE to do some swapping with you! And, you never know, I've got lots of relatives down there in the biggest state in the union (Alaska doesn't count since it's mostly ice) so it could happen!

Re: CUBAN MELODIOUS FINCHES
You asked if they could sing? IMO NO they can't!!!
There is a breeder local to Donna and I that has beautiful babies for sale but she just gave them to Floyd - but he still has them... your husband is usually in this area....
