Just a quick question, when buying silk plants from craft stores (ie. Micheal's) or the dollar store do you have to worry about chemicals or perfumes?

I've been buying fake plants from the pet store's reptile section, but they're $20 a pop and they don't seem to go that far. Hence, not much greenery in my cages! I've been too scared to buy from the dollar store or Micheal's.

Misty,

Thanks for sharing a picture. I agree with you, it looks very nice and realistic too. Now I know what to look for!

When I buy my plastic plants from the dollar store, the first thing I do is spray them down with a Green Works Spray (no harsh chemicals and safe for the environment), then I rinse them well with hot water and let them dry.

I also soak mine before I put them in the aviary.

By the way, I buy all of mine at HobbyLobby. They have a great selection and often 40-50% discounts...
Walk-in aviary with Waxbills (6 Cordon Bleu, 3 Orange Cheek, 3 Black-rumped, 1 Lavender, ), 1 European Goldfinch, 4 Gouldians, 2 Spice Finches, 6 Owl Finches, 4 Budgies and 2 male Button Quail.
I also have 2 parrotlets, 3 dogs, 1 snake and 3 freshwater fishtanks.

Misty,
I too love the plastic bamboo but I have been buying the aquarium plastic type. They clean so well as they are designed for water use , they also have no hard metal wires that can wear and poke the finches. I just pop the base that you put undergravel in the aquarium that anhors the plant and snap the piece on the cage bars or nest. you can get them in many different lenghts ...I like the 36" long ones

This is good to know. I was going to put pink/lilac orchids in my new aviary, but now have decided to stick with just the greenery. I got alot of the stuff at Michaels.. they just had a 50% off sale. :P

Thanks, too! I'm heading to my grandparents next week, so I'll have to check out the Micheal's down her way. Is it weird that I live in downtown Toronto (almost) and I head out of town to do most of my shopping?
