I currently have a very large flight (5' wide) but I saw one of these cages and I thought of buying one to place four gouldians in and I'm not sure if that would be cruel or something cause I know they're supposed to have the biggest space possible, but the easy cleaning and maintaining design tempted me a lot especially considering how fragile these birds are.

It will give me the privilege of having the birds next to my desk where I could monitor them better and move them closer to the window every morning for a nicer view and sunshine. Here's the one I'm talking about:

CAGE DIMENSIONS
29 1/2 ”L x 15” W x 36 1/2”H (74.9 CM x 38.1 CM x 97.7 CM)
Horizontal wire 2.6 MM Vertical wire: 3 MM

I've had several of the vision cages. They are great, and I think that particular cage would be fine for four gouldians as long as you aren't breeding them in that cage. Finches do enjoy having the flight room, but not everyone has the room or money to provide them with that. If you want them by your desk, that cage looks like a great one! The bottom also really helps keep seed hulls in, in fact, I loved these cages b/c they kept the area a lot cleaner.

I would just be careful about having them by the window b/c of any drafts... gouldians are sensitive birds and seem to get sick easy (at least with my experience owning them).

Where do you live by the way?

Thanks Emily, I wasn't quite sure how good or bad they'd be for four birds. I've been dealing with a lot of seeds and egg food splattered all over the floor in the quarantine flights which makes me want that cage even more.

I live in Dubai (ME, Asia) and the store I found the cage in is asking for almost double its price online so I think I may order it after I buy the Dr. Marshall starter kit as I want to recondition the birds and strengthen their immune system a bit more before placing them in their new home.

I have a cage (not this type) that is similar in size--30long, 18deep, 36high. I have 5 Gouldians in it, and they get along great. I don't know if this is how Gouldians are, but mine have never been as athletic as my other finches. They spend a lot more time just hanging around on their perches, though they do love the swing. This cage will let you have them where you can enjoy them. I have an 8-gal aquarium on my desk next to my computer monitor, so I can look at it while working on the computer (especially since I have slow dial-up--can watch the fishies while waiting for a picture to come up!).

Personally, I think the birds would be fine. Especially if you were able to keep your 5' flight and let them in their for some horizontal flight exercise every once in a while. I agree that it is probably better to have something that you can maintain a clean and healthy environment easily.

I have the medium version of this cage. I love it!!! Should have gotten the large but $$$ mattered right then.
I keep four finches in mine. 2 Zebs and one Society with plans to get another society. I don't breed or provide nests in mine. The birds all seem quite cheerful and do spend some time flying around in it.

Love the, no mess outside the cage, perks. :D

Hi all! I've been without an internet connection for a while, but I'm back now, and I've got some pictures :D (though it's pretty hard to get a decent pic of the cage as a whole)

First, let me reintroduce my finches.

Image
This little guy is Chester.

Image
And here's Henry.

Image
This is where they live.

Image
Look, you can almost see them in there :P

Image
And here they are in their corner. I can't seem to ever get a picture of them when they're doing anything.

Anyhow. I love this cage. It was a bit tricky to clean at first, but I'm working out a system. It keeps most of the bird mess (feathers, seed hulls, etc) inside the cage, and I love that the seed and water cups are accessible from the outside. It's a lot less stressful for my little guys when I'm changing their food and water now that I'm not sticking my arm in their cage.

My only issue with this cage is that I can't find a good spot to attach a cuttlebone. I've tried several different locations, but I've yet to find anywhere that the birds will actually use it. Does anyone have any suggestions for alternatives to a cuttlebone?

Thanks :)

Stabilization, Top Heavy Object

Post by S. W. Houston » Thu Jan 10, 2008 5:05 am

Dinosaur party,
Have had a problem as you, not with a Cage, but similar. There are two points to address, when you’re trying to stabilize a “top heavy” object.

First, get the Base on a stable Platform.
IF you’re on a Tile Floor, then that’s probably as good as you can get. But, if it's on Carpet, use some of the Plastic Carpet Protectors (4 in this case), the conical spikes penetrate through the softer material, and may not actually touch the hard surface under the Carpet, but reduce the instability/give of it, considerably.

Next, is getting the Base heavier than what’s on top of it.
Hopefully, you can access the interior of the Stand in some way, even if you have to cut a hole in the backside, and cover it up after the procedure.

I have used Sand, Crushed Rock, even Bricks in one instance, to get the Base weighted up well. Any material you use, MUST “settle” to the lower section, that’s important, or you’ll defeat the intent.

The heavier you can make it down there, the better it will be. Just consider what type material is containing the ballast, and put as much weight as reasonable in it. If I had to guess at an amount, I’d venture to say to increase the total weight of the piece, about 25 to 30%, and that should help a lot. If you use sand, be sure to check the Base carefully, and tape up any hole or penetration, preferably from the inside, before you start pouring it in.

Hope this helps.

Have a good Day ! :)

Looks like the Zebras really like the new cage. Glad that it is working well for you.

the Vision cages are very popular.

We recently became a Hagen dealer and will be carrying the Vision line. If anyone needs prices do not hesitate to e-mail me directly for a quote and shipping.
