Now that the weather seems to be (finally!!) taking a warm turn,
if I can find some willow trees that aren't in 6 feet of snow (that's not an exaggeration...

) I'm gonna bring some home for the birds.
I let them sit in water for a day or two till the buds break open, then new perches for the cage. They LOVE picking at the leaves and catkins. That's entertainment at it's best

You're right Tracy - fresh branches at this time of year with the buds breaking dormancy would be GREAT for the fids!
For any that are unsure - always make sure you have fid-safe branches - you can Google lists of safe / un-safe plants for finches.

Good Caution Liz
Fortunately willow is one of the good ones and excellent for their little feet with all the variations in branch sizes. I Do pick them away from main roads or ANYthing that may have been sprayed.
Takes them about a day to strip any catkins, but OH what a day!

Mozelle, I love this post and idea -- someday would you take some pictures of the willow branches with catkins on them? I'd like to see what you are referring to specifically....
