Good job on your aviary. Its looks like you have put a lot of though in it.

Yes... and of course you have seen how they buzz by like a streak of lightning. Now it is through the door. I cringe to think of what is going to happen when the door goes up this weekend.

I have to make a trip to Hobby Lobby and get some vines before then.......

Could you hang a bedsheet or something for a few hours or a day before the door goes up? So they can get used to an obstacle being there but not killing themselves flying into it. When they fly into the bedsheet they'll just cruise gently down to the bottom... unlike a solid door.

Course, if you hang vines (maybe 5 or 6 or more strings on each side of the door) they would get used to them too and won't really need to see the door - they'll stop and perch on the vines; and you just have to push the vines (sans finches) out of your way to open the door when you go through.

Liz, I have used a bedsheet before and it does work great. That is a great idea and I think I will hang one
tomorrow to get them used to it. As far as the vines are concerned I thought I might just add
them to the screen on the door and that way when I open the door they go with it.

What a good idea with the bedsheet--they can see it, and even if they fly into it, they can't possibly hurt themselves. I also like the idea of adding vines to the door as a permanent reminder to the birds that there is an obstacle there.

We hung the door yesterday . I put some fir limbs on the door and no one has run into it. (yet)
I also had to hang a shower curtain on the side. The first time I went out the door one of the juvies
zipped out before I knew what happened. So now when I enter the larger area, I pull the curtain behind me
before I open the door. (hubby's idea!)

Aren't men smart???

So... I am in the process of moving (with the help of my trap cage) all the juvies and hen gouldians
over to the other side. I am trying to decide who else to move over there. I think I am going to
move the cubans and a pair of forbes also. I want ALL gould breeding to stop for the summer and hopefully
everyone will go through a molt and then in the fall I will allow some of them to breed again.
They are not too happy with me at the moment, but hopefully we will all adjust soon. ( me included)

Everything looks great and I am sure they all will adjust quicker than you will

Just think how happy those girls and boys will be happy to reconnect in the fall. Get your video camera ready as you will see more courting in 10 minutes than you have ever seen before

One caution..... with the gouldian hens removed, keep an eye on any promiscous males that they don't try and breed a different species of hen. I had put some males to rest in the large aviary where I have red throats growing out. However, seems they weren't in the resting mood. Those gouldian boys started courting my red throat hens

The boys are now in flight cages...by themselves

I have been catching up hens and juvies all weekend with my little trap cage.

They are not so happy about it and are hanging all over the door looking at the other side. So now the only thing on the nursery side are all the hen gouldians, three society finches with their one lone baby in the nest and all the uncolored juvies. It is quite different for me now because I have to make two sets of food in the mornings.

Question..... do you think the juvies and hens that are resting need fresh eggfood each day?
