Re: Bird Building - The Chirp Shire
I always bred mine as pairs and didn't seperate the males. Most times the males help out alot with the chicks though females can rear them by themselves. But if you have a cooperative male it will add years to your hens life by letting him carry some of the child rearing burdens. I would sometimes have to seperate the males for a short spell by sliding the wire partition into the cage bank. This way he could feed but not harn the chicks. Once I was sure the chicks were eating on their own, I would remove them and let Dad have his girl back
I actually had very little aggression. I seperated the males from the females after 2 or 3 clutches (just like I do the goudlians) into their own segregated flights. Once breeding season rolled around again and paired back together they always got right down to business of rearing kids.

Re: Bird Building - The Chirp Shire
Thanks Candace
I'm still trying to wrap my mind around them - the colors and now three different mutations with this variety; agate, opal and dimorphic (mosaic).
They were sold as a pair so I bred them but then I sat and worried that maybe I shouldn't have because of their being the same color - I'm in the "finch" genetics mode?!

Re: Bird Building - The Chirp Shire
The canary mutations are endless it seems with new ones arising still
I kept it simple and bred dimorphic together, Yellows togethers, along with some green for varigated. I had whites and white varigated/ticked, and then I had the red factors, which I bred together. I had a couple of isabelles but never got much from them.
This way I only had to pay attention to the feather type. Buff to an intensive for the best feathering of the young. Two buff types produce sloppy feathering with increased chances of feather cyst and 2 intensive feather types will produce thinly feathered, skinny looking birds.
I am working on purchasing another store location and really want to sell canaries...so I will be shopping soon for some breed stock. Could you PM me where you purchased yours if they have more to sell. I prefer buying from the breeder rather than the broker if this is possible. Thanks.

Oh gosh, your canaries are sooooooooooooo beautiful!!!
I have red factors and American singers but your yellow agate opal mosaics are just gorgeous!!!
If you ever take videos again, could you try to record Sinatra's song? They both look so super and the fact that you say he sings 101 songs is like having a cake that tastes even as good as it looks. Looking forward to hearing about your new species that you picked up at the mart. Soooo exciting!!

God is my redeemer and it is through Him I have found eternal happiness. I am grateful, I am blessed, and I am truly loved. I wish all this and more for all members of our finch forum family. May you all be blessed and highly favored.
